Carneros Scores Second QROOI Sprint Series Win Of Season

AJAX, ONT–JUNE 29, 2022–Coming off a runner-up effort in the Picov Maturity on June 1st, Carneros picked up his second QROOI Sprint Series victory of 2022 on Wednesday.

The son of champion Prospect To The Top kicked off his 2022 racing season on May 22nd with a win in the QROOI Sprint Series Stakes #1. Today he was picked up the second leg with a half-length win over Night Fishin.

Under jockey Brian Bell, Carneros was a wire-to-wire winner as the post time favorite in the $15,434(US) QROOI Sprint Series #2. The :11.935 clocking equals a 98 speed index with a 10 mph tailwind.

"Jason has had him in perfect shape this year, he's an awesome horse," said Bell, who won three races on the day to move into a tie for second on the leading rider standings with seven wins.

Jason Pascoe conditions the Oklahoma-bred 7-year-old for owner Milena Kwiecien.  Stone Chase Stables, LLC bred the gelding from the Valiant Hero mare Cakebread And Thou. Carneros has compiled (43) 14-10-4 record the $6,860(US) winner's purse today boosted his bankroll to $126,364.

"Carneros is just the coolest little horse ever and probably the sweetest gelding on the planet too," said Kwiecien. "I promised his breeders Butch and Nancy Wise (from Oklahoma) that I will have him forever. He deserves the best home and most cushy retirement."

Pascoe sent out four winners on the day, five if you consider On Pointe, owned by his mother Sharon, who won race 3 but was disqualified and placed fourth.
 
Kwiecien also won with her Ontario homebred Countryfried Chicken, trained by Pascoe, and a son of her own stallion Maryland Magic, and Kold Kinda Star (Pascoe), a son of Cold Hard Dash, a stallion she owns in partnership.
 
Pascoe has 15 wins after eight days of Ajax Downs meeting, while Scott Reid, who won two races on June 29, sits in second with seven wins.

Trainer Dan Giles conditions runner-up Night Fishin for owner-breeder Mary Schrama. Ramiro Castillo rode the 8-year-old Sugarman Perry mare out of the Fishers Dash mare Fisher Lines. A multiple stakes winning Ontario-bred, Night Fishin has banked $101,952.

Zoxtobeyou, a son of multiple stake sire Pappasito, finished a head back to earn $1,715(US) for third.  Janet Grice trains the 8-year-old for owner-breeder Steve Hunter. Lloyd Desouza had the riding call on the Ontario-bred out of A Leading Memory by Special Leader. The multiple stakes-placed gelding has earned $82,5122 in 43 career starts.

Chicksdigmymoneybags, Sw The Redeemer and Fiesty Icon completed the field.

Racing continues at Ajax Downs on Wednesday, July 6 with the final of the $60,000-added Ontario Bred Futurity for 2-year-olds. First race post time is 1:30 p.m.
