All Ways Outduels Cattail Cove To Win Flight 109 At 12-1 Odds

LOS ALAMITOS' CA—FEBRUARY 4, 2023—Boardshorts Stables enjoyed its first stakes win at Los Alamitos Race Course after their Los Alamitos Equine Sale graduate All Ways upset the big favorite Cattail Cove at 12-1 odds in the $20,000 Flight 109 Stakes on Saturday at Los Alamitos.

Boardshorts Stables had a big night all around, as the racing operation also won the race prior to the Flight 109 with Firecracker Futurity winner AJ Run For Cash. All Ways and AJ Run For Cash were both ridden by Adrian Loza and trained by Juan Aleman, who also saddled Link Newcomb’s Cattail Cove in the Flight 109.

Starting from the outside post number six, All Ways was fourth at the start, a head behind Cattail Cove, who also didn’t have a fastest of starts.

The stablemates continued third and fourth through the first 200 yards before they both began to gain ground on the leaders Rox Win and Up The Ladder. All four hit the wire with only 4/100ths of a second separating the winner from the fourth-place finisher.

When the dust settled, All Ways had edged Cattail Cove by a head, winning the 350-yard race in a time of :17.718 to Cattail’s Cove time of :17.736. Mike Casselman’s Rox Win finished third in a time of :17.751, while Up The Ladder was fourth in :17.759.

For the Boersma family’s Boardshorts Stables, the winning double was one to remember at Los Alamitos.

"I’ve been fortunate to have their horses," said Aleman. "I’ve been training for them for three years now. All their horses, they’ve bought at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale. They’ve supported the sale. We’ve had good luck. This horse (All Ways) hasn’t always had the best of luck. He’s always drawn the middle and he’s not the quickest. I even told his groom, if a horse can beat Cattail, it’s could be this horse because he’s on the outside and he closes. In all of his races, he’s shown that he has a lot of close. Cattail Cove didn’t get out tonight, but he ran a big race also."

Bred by Ed Allred, All Ways was purchased for $26,000 at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale. He is a gelding by Fly Thru The Fire out of the Raise A Secret mare Million Ways. The broodmare previously produced the stakes winner Counting The Ways, who earned $201,352 while racing the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby.

He won the 2020 Pat Hyland Handicap at Los Alamitos. All Ways earned $11,000 for his victory in the Flight 109 to take his career bankroll to $45,325. He improved to four wins from 17 starts. He’s finished in the top three 10 times during his career.

Ridden by Jesus Rios Ayala, Cattail Cove earned $4,500 for his runner-up effort to take his career tally to $613,432. A two-time stakes winner last year, the Steve Burns-bred Cattail Cove has finished in the top three in 13 stakes during his 35-race career.

Ridden by Cruz Mendez for owner/trainer Mike Casselman, Rox Win earned $2,500 for running third.

Up The Ladder, Nevada Charles, and Five Bar Runner completed the field.
