Ruidoso Select Sale Yearlings Dominate Day 1 Schooling Races at Ruidoso Downs
Ultra Rich, under jockey Francisco Calderon, setting the fastest schooling time on Monday at Ruidoso Downs. Another 22 races will be held tomorrow at the mountain racetrack.

Ruidoso Select Sale Yearlings Dominate Day 1 Schooling Races at Ruidoso Downs

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM–MAY 1, 2023–Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale graduates dominated 22 schooling races for 2-year-olds held today at Ruidoso Downs, for juveniles who remain eligible to the Ruidoso Triple Crown series races– Ruidoso Futurity(G1), Rainbow Futurity(G1) and All American Futurity(G1) and the Zia Futurity(RG1) and Mountain Top Futurity(RG2) for state-breds.

The five fastest times came from Ruidoso summer sale graduates and 10 races winners were from the Ruidoso Select Yearling or the Ruidoso New Mexico-Bred Yearling 2022 sales.

Ultra Rich, a $95,000 Select Sale graduate posted the fastest time of the day when the daughter of leading sire Favorite Cartel was a 1-1/4 length winner for owner La Feliz Montana Ranch and trainer Xavier Rodriguez. She held the fastest clocking of :15.441 seconds for 300 yards.

Champion jockey Francisco Calderon rode the sister to 2022 Ruidoso Futurity(G1) finalist Ride Around. The brown filly is out of Southern California Derby(G1) winner Walk Around Blues by Walk Thru Fire.  The third dam is Los Alamitos Million Futurity(G1) winner and grade 1 producer First Place Queen by First Place Dash.

Calderon teamed with trainer Gerald Reed to get the second-fastest clocking of :15.447 seconds in Race 4 while riding $172,000 Ruidoso Select graduate First Warning. Ted Rushing and Lynn Landrum own the half-brother to stakes winners La Mos Corona and La Mos Pyc.

First Warning is out of the multiple graded winning Heza Fast Dash mare La Mos Chingono, a sister to champion distance horse B And G Fast Dash. This is also the family of champion Panther Mountain.

Trainer Trey Wood sent out Paragon Farms LLC's $240,000 Ruidoso Select purchase Scream Machine to win the fifth trial and post the third-fastest time of :15.449 seconds.

Champion jockey Ricky Ramirez rode the brother to Golden State Million Futurity(G1) winner Little Talks and half-brother to Ruidoso Derby(G1) winner Rock You. Out of the blue-hen mare Babe On The Fly, by Strawfly Special, Scream Machine is a full or half-sibling to 13 black type.

Champion trainer Heath Taylor  and Trey Wood saddled five winners each on Monday's race card. Mike Joiner had three, Xavier Rodriguez and Chris O'Dell had two each.

Favorite Cartel was the leading schooling day 1 sire with seven winners. Apollitical Jess, Jet Black Patriot and Tempting Dash sired two winners each today.

Ruidoso Downs will kick off its 2023 live racing season with trials for the $1 million Ruidoso Futurity(G1) on Friday, May 26 and Saturday, May 27.

Tuesday's 22 races will feature at least 30 six-figure summer sale yearlings headed by Heritage Place Yearling Sale $515,000 sale topper Maxximumm. Trainer Heath Taylor has named jockey Rodrigo Vallejo to ride the son of second-crop sire and champion Kvn Corona for owner Caliche Walls Venture, LLC.

Maxximumm, a half-brother to last year's Grade 2 Robert Adair Kindergarten third-place finisher Muy Bien Corona, is out of the stakes-placed Walk Thru Fire mare Lady Perry On Fire, a sister to champion Jess Walking Thru and half-sister to champion Sass Me Blue. Maxximumm will start from the three post in Race 4.

Race 14 will feature Ruidoso Select Sale $460,000 sale-topper Goodyme, a half-brother to three Grade 1 Heritage Place Futurity winners Champion Duponte, Nymeria and Sunnysyde, will start for owner West Texas Racing Partner. Trainer Chris O'Dell has named Francisco Calderon to the ride the son of leading sire Apollitical Jess out of the Ivory James mare Havanah Goodime. The sorrel colt will break from post four.

Asscher, a $350,000 Ruidoso Select graduate will start under jockey Bryan Candanosa in Race 2 for owner Lance Bland and trainer Marc Jungers. The daughter of three-time world champion sire FDD Dynasty is out of the champion and multiple stakes-producer Astica by Jesse James Jr. The second dam is champion Alice K White by First Down Dash.
