Cal Bred Smyly Slight Surprise In Arapahoe Park's $74,370Rocky Mountain Derby

AURORA, CO—SEPTEMBER 29, 2024—Smyly, a California-bred daughter of multiple stakes sire Separate Interest, was a slight surprise at 6-1 odds on Sunday when she defeated Sticky Lou Who by a neck in the $74,370 Rocky Mountain Derby at Arapahoe Park.

Jockey Cordarelton J. Benn piloted Smyly to her second career stakes win, completing the 400 yards in 17.792 seconds, a 98-speed index into an 8 mph headwind.  It was the fourth career win in eight starts for last year's Mile High Futurity winner.

Trainer Chris Gandarilla conditions the bay filly for owner Celenes's Racing LLC. Steve D. Burn, DVM, bred Smyly from the One Famous Eagle mare One Tempting Chick. Today's winner's purse, valued at $44,622, boosted her earnings to $87,657.

Smyly rewarded her backers with a $13.60 win payoff, $4.80 to place, and $4 to show.

Runner-up Sticky Lou Who races for owner Nathan Murphy. Trainer Fernando Manriquez-Garay named jockey Jorge Torres to ride the Big Lew filly out of Sydney Lou Who by Frieghttrain B. Bred in Oklahoma by Duane Murphy, Sticky Lou, Who earned $14,874 for her effort.

Secretsthatshekeeps finished half-a-length back to earn $7,437 for third. Trainer Hipolito Michel-Valverde tapped jockey Jose Enriquez to ride the daughter of Hez Our Secret for owner Alberto Martinez. Flag Ranch, LLC bred the gray filly in Oklahoma from the Mr Jess Perry mare Ja Jess Elegance.

Completing the Rocky Mountain Derby field were Just Run By, Fiddle Faddle Foose, Brjo Spirit, Injeanius, Presido Pete, Emberly, and Tds Quarter Moon.
