SELMA, TX—JUNE 29, 2020—Retama Park will host a trio of qualifying trials for both the John Deere Juvenile and Adequan Derby Challenge stakes on Friday's race card. The 10 fastest qualifiers from each divisional race will return to Retama Park on Saturday, July 25th to vie for the winner's share of a $35,000-added purse in each final. Winners of both those races will earn a berth to compete in their respective divisions on Bank of America Challenge Championship Night to be held again this October in Albuquerque.

John Deere Retma Park Juvenile Challenge Trials

A bevy of first-time starters will race in three trials for the $35,000-added John Deere Retama Park Juvenile Challenge (Races 3 thru 5). However the second trial (Race 4) features the Grade 3 finalist Super Fly B, a Texas-bred son of first-crop sire champion Ec Jet One.

Conditioned by trainer Alonso Neri for owner Jose Jesus Sandoval, Super Fly B qualified for the $283,210 Harrah's Entertainment Futurity (G3) in his first career start at Louisiana Downs in March. However the final was canceled due to the Corona-Virus outbreak in Louisiana and the 10 qualifiers split the purse.

In his only other start, a trial for the Heritage Place Futurity, Super Fly B exploited late to finish a neck back in a dead-heat for second. Bielau Oaks bred the brown colt from the Teller Cartel mare Kar Dash Ability. The $5,500 Heritage Place Yearling graduate has banked $2,259.

Adequan Retama Park Derby Challenge Trials

Race 7 thru 9 have been carded as trials for the $35,000-added Adequan Retama Park Derby Challenge.

Grade 2 multiple stakes winner Expedyte will head the opening trial for owner Raedele Phipps and trainer Alonso Neri. Damian Martinez will ride the four-time winning son of multiple stakes sire Freighttrain B.

Winner of the Grade 2 Firecracker Futurity and the Sam Houston Juvenile Invitational last year, Expedyte has earned $174,808. Bobby D. Cox bred the brown colt from the Shazoom mare Shazumba. He is a $14,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate.

The second trial (race 8) features A Painted Dynasty, a son of world champion sire FDD Dynasty who finished third in the $130,000 Oklahoma Derby(G3) in March and enters off a sixth-place effort in the $232,000 Heritage Place Derby(G2) in his last start.

Also trained by Neri, A Painted Dynasty races for owner David Gutierrez. The Mixer Ranch bred the $15,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate from the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Third Painted Sign.

He was a fifth in the Grade 1 Texas Classic Futurity last fall as well as third in the aforementioned Expedyte's Firecracker Futurity(G2) last seson. Also a four-time winner, A Painted Dynasty has earned $189,000.

The final trial (Race 9) will feature the stakes-placed maiden, Rusty Blood Gl, who was third in the John Deere Retama Park Juvenile last year. Trainer Angel Sanchez conditions the Apollitical Blood 3-year-old for Garza Laurel Partnership LLC.

A homebred, from the Valiant Hero mare Dusty Rusty, Rusty Blood Gl has placed in three of five starts that also included the Sam Houston Futurity(G2) and the John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship(G3). He has banked $45,160.
