SHELBYVILLE, IN—AUGUST 18, 2020—Beach Treat has received the nod as the favorite for the 12th running of the $94,600 Bob Woodard Memorial Classic Final Thursday, Aug. 20 at Indiana Grand. The race for older Indiana bred Quarter Horses will be contested at a distance of 400 yards.

Beach Treat has just now come into his own for his fourth start of 2020. The Ron Brown owned and trained five-year-old was last year’s winner of the Bob Woodard Memorial Classic and was also named 2019 Indiana Quarter Horse of the Year.

Beach Treat is teamed up with regular rider Oscar Macias and will start from post three at odds of 7-2. The Escondido Beach son will be seeking his second win in a row after winning his trial for the third fastest time of the finalists in the Woodard Memorial Classic.

Joining Beach Treat as a favorite is another son of Escondido Beach, Beach Cartel. Hailing from the Randy Smith Stable, the eight-year-old gelding, who is owned and bred by Sheri Miller, was a third-place finisher in his trial, recording the fourth fastest time for the final. Sammy Mendez will ride at odds of 4-1 from post one looking to move the grey gelding up into the top three all-time leading Indiana Quarter Horse earners as he seeks his 17th career win with lifetime earnings in excess of $451,000.

Valiantinecandyrocks, the quickest qualifier for the Woodard Memorial Classic, has been selected as the third choice on the morning line at odds of 4-1. Owned by Tammy and Lance Finlinson, the four-year-old Valiant Hero mare was a winner by a nose over Kitty Sixup in the trial in a time of :19.973. Lily Gonzalez trains and Victor Olivo will ride from post two seeking to score their third straight win.

The full field for the Bob Woodard Memorial Classic, in post-position order with jockey and odds, includes:

Estimated post time for the Woodard Memorial Classic is 6:32 p.m. as the 10th and final race on the Thursday card at Indiana Grand.

Live racing is held Monday through Thursday beginning at 2:20 p.m. Three more Saturday programs are slated for all-Quarter Horse days Aug. 8, Oct. 3 and Oct. 24. The Aug. 8 program will begin at 10 a.m.
