La Fiesta Derby, Futurity Trials Set for Saturday

ALBUQUERQUE, NM—AUGUST 31, 2020—Thirteen 3-year-olds, headed by multiple stakes winners Valentina Relentless and Dr Tool, have been entered in Saturday’s 400-yard La Fiesta Derby trials at Albuquerque Downs.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the September 20, $200,000-est. La Fiesta Derby final.

Valentina Relentless will be making her sophomore season debut off of a 2-year-old campaign during which the Hes Relentless filly earned $52,368 from five outs and won the 330-yard, $73,000 Hadley/Giles Futurity and 300-yard, $51,000 Golden Spike Futurity, both at Weber Downs at Ogden, Utah. Jorge Morales-Flores trains Valentina Relentless for owner Kenia Pinela Marioni.

Valentina Relentless drew post 5 and will be ridden by Paul Nieto in the second of two trials.

Dr Tool is trained by Sergio Ibarra for owner Luis H. Gonzalez. A bay son of Kiss My Hocks, the gelding has banked $45,076 from four outs this season, and his three wins include a 1 1/2-length victory in the 400-yard, $51,000 Adequan Weber Downs Derby Challenge on May 24, and a three-quarter length win in the 400-yard, $40,000 Adequan Pocatello Downs Derby Challenge on July 8.

Dr Tool drew post 2 and will be ridden by Sergio Becerra Jr. in the first heat.

Also on Saturday, J & SM Inc.’s Speed Dynasty is one of 31 2-year-olds entered in four 400-yard La Fiesta Futurity trials.

A sorrel son of champion FDD Dynasty trained by Fred Danley, Speed Dynasty is coming off of a one-length win in the eighth of 16 440-yard All American Derby (G1) trials on August 21. The gelding has earned $45,400 from five starts, all at Ruidoso Downs, and he was a finalist in the June 7, $1-million Ruidoso Futurity (G1).

Speed Dynasty was a $150,000 purchase at the 2018 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. The gelding drew post 7 and will be ridden by Jose Alvarez in the fourth heat.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the $300,000-est. La Fiesta Futurity final on September 20.
