Whistle Stop Cafe, Flashing My Pjs Clash In $3-Million All American Futurity On Labor Day

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—SEPTEMBER 6, 2020—Flashing My Pjs will try to get done on Labor Day what her mother couldn't eight years ago.

In 2012 trainer John Stinebaugh saddled the filly Pj Chick In Black to the fastest qualifying time for the rich All American Futurity(G1). The daughter of champion sire Desirio drew off in her trial by an astonishing 5- ¾ lengths in :21.081 seconds, but had a troubled trip in the Labor Day final and finished sixth.

Monday Stinebaugh will lead her daughter Flashing My Pjs. who posted the fastest qualifying time of :21.203 seconds from two-days of trials in mid-August, to the paddock in hopes of capturing his first All American Futurity(G1).

The $3-million event will be run before a very limited number of fans due to restrictions in New Mexico brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. The race anchors the track's closing-day card that includes the $200,000-Guaranteed All American Juvenile, for the second 10 fastest qualifiers from the All American trials.

Stinebaugh has been coming to Ruidoso Downs since 1987.

“I had a bunch of really nice fillies this year,” Stinebaugh said. “During the spring and coming into the summer, I told the owners of Flashing My Pjs that I felt like she was the only one of those fillies that would be the real quarter of a miler that would show up in August.

“She’s tough like that and she’s big. She’s a big, strong horse.”

For the finale, Flashing My Pjs (7/2) breaks from Post 2 under jockey Benito Baca. She races for the Flashing My Pj's Partnership.

Flashing My Pjs is by the All American Futurity and Derby sire First Moonflash and out of the aforementioned Pj Chick in Black, winner of the 2012 Ruidoso Futurity(G1). According to Stinebaugh, Flashing My Pjs shares some similarities with her champion dam, who earned more than $600,000.

“She acts just like her and their conformation is very, very similar,” he said. “Her mom was as fast as horses get. This filly is fast, too.”

Stinebaugh will also saddled Flash Bak (15/1) who finished a half-length off Day 1 fastest qualifier Whistle Stop Cafe in his August 21st trial.

“I think they have him to deal with,” Stinebaugh said. “That’s a really nice horse. He comes from a great family of horses.”

Flash Bak is a son champion and first-crop sire Moonin The Eagle from the Grade 1-winning mare Checknbac, who is by Check Him Out. Jesus Ayala has the mount from Post 4.

However, getting to that $1.5 million pay-off at the finish line will tough when you have to go through the likes the morning-line favorite Whistle Stop Cafe (3/1), the undefeated Grade 1 winner of the $1-million Rainbow Futurity.

Whitmire Ranch's Whistle Stop Cafe will start from Post 7, under champion rider Ricky Ramirez. He’s been aboard for all five of her starts – all wins, including the Heritage Place Juvenile at Remington Park. She has banked $474,986 this season.

Ramirez who rides first call for champion trainer Blane Wood selected the starting position for the daughter of multiple stakes sire Freighttrain B.

“My gut feeling was to go with the 7,” he said. “It was open. I don’t have any reason why. I like the 8 and 9 horse. It will be a three-way race.”

“She’s been doing good,” Ramirez said. “She’s been training and eating all her feed. I took her to the track Tuesday morning. She stood in the gate. I took her around the racetrack.”

The 35-year-old Ramirez, who rode in his first All American Futurity in 2009 and has ridden every year but two since then, will be looking for his first win in the prestigious race.

Longtime trainer Wood saddled his first All American Futurity winner, Apocalyptical Jess, in 2018. His father Leo Wood trained the 1979 All American Futurity winner Pie In The Sky.

Wood will also send out the lightly raced Caliente Caramelo (20/1), a daughter of champion and first-crop sire Jess Good Candy. The royally bred filly is a half-sister to Champion Hotsepper and 2020 Rainbow Derby(G1) winner Hotsempting. Caliente Caramelo races for her breeder Fulton Quein Sabe Ranches, LP.Tanner Thedford will ride from Post 6.

Jose Guzman's Instygator (9/2), a Grade 1-placed son of multiple stakes sire Ivory James, will break from post 8 following a 3-½ length troubled trial win for trainer Jaime Hernandez. Last year's All American Futurity(G1) winning champion jockey James Flores will be in the irons.

Bobby D. Cox's Grade 1-placed homebred Jettz (6/1) starts from post 9 after an impressive 2-¾ length trial win on day 1. The son of first-crop sire One Fabulous Eagle was trained by the late John Buchanan who passed away on August 28. Cox is also the breeder Whistle Stop Cafe and Instygator.
