Two Dozen Sophomores Entered in Altoona Derby Trials

ALTOONA, IA—SEPTEMBER 8, 2020—Twenty-four 3-year-olds, headed by B. Thomas Pick’s Zoomn On Bye, are entered in Friday’s 400-yard Altoona Derby trials at Prairie Meadows.

A gray son of Mezoomn trained by Cory Rumsey, Zoomn On Bye won two stakes during the Canterbury Park meet -- the 400-yard, $45,000 Gopher State Derby on July 7, and the 400-yard, $49,000 Canterbury Park Derby on August 11. The gelding drew post 6 and will be ridden by Agustin Silva in the last of three trials.

Southard Queen, a homebred daughter of Coronado Cartel trained by Jason Olmstead for owner Jo Rice, is coming off of a half-length victory in the 400-yard, $93,000 Iowa Double Gold Derby (R) at Prairie Meadows on July 11. The filly drew the rail post and will be ridden by Berkley Packer in the second heat.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the September 25, $125,000-est. Altoona Derby final.
