Four Quarter Horse Stakes Scheduled for Iowa Classics Night

ALTOONA, IA—SEPTEMBER 22, 2020—CR Appollitical Joe will put his three-race win streak on the line in Saturday’s 350-yard, $137,500 Jim Bader Futurity (R) for Iowa-bred 2-year-olds at Prairie Meadows.

The fastest qualifier, CR Appollitical Joe is coming off of a dominating 4 3/4-length victory in the first of three trials on September 5. The gelded son of world champion Apollitical Jess’ streak includes a half-length win in the 330-yard, $76,000 Hawkeye Futurity (R) on July 24.

CR Appollitical Joe is trained by Jason Olmstead for owners Curt Tobin and Dick Tobin. The homebred gelding drew the rail post and will be ridden by Berkley Packer.

Three other Quarter Horse stakes are slated for Iowa Classics Night. Ten state-bred 3-year-olds are entered back in Saturday’s 400-yard, $108,880 Polk County Derby (R). A stakes winner during the current Prairie Meadows meet, CR Hez The Man drew post 4 and will be ridden by Berkley Packer for owners Curt Tobin and Dick Tobin, and trainer Jason Olmstead. The homebred Heza Fast Dash gelding has banked $37,962 from four outs in Oklahoma and Iowa this season, and his season record includes a one-length victory in the 350-yard, $59,000 Cyclone Derby (R) for Iowa-bred sophomores on July 18.

B/B Wessels LLC’s Iris Royal Jess heads a field of six Iowa-breds entered in Saturday’s 400-yard, $55,000 Terrace Hill Stakes (R). A gray son of Captain Courage, the 5-year-old gelding has won his last two races, including the 350-yard, $25,000 Cy-Hawk Stakes (R) on July 18. Iris Royal Jess drew post 5 and will be ridden by Cristian Esqueda for trainer Alex Wessels.

Nine Iowa-bred fillies and mares, topped by The Polar Vortex, are entered in Saturday’s 350-yard, $55,000 Future of Iowa Stakes (R). A homebred 5-year-old daughter of champion Carters Cartel, The Polar Vortex is trained by Jason Olmstead for owner Tom Lepic of Iowa City, and the mare will be shortening in distance off of her nose victory at odds of 11-1 in the 400-yard, $26,000 AQHA Prairie Meadows Distaff Challenge Stakes on August 15. The Polar Vortex drew post 2 and will be ridden by Jesus Salazar.
