Gomez Goes For Ninth Kindergarten Win, Talented Fillies Among Top Contenders

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MAY 14, 2021—Trainer Jaime Gomez will look to extend his stakes record for wins in the Grade 2, $297,900 Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity at 300 yards when he saddles three solid contenders in the 67th running of this race Sunday at Los Alamitos.

Gomez will send out Southern Best, Docs Fast Lane and FG Jess Seis, all three winners during the night of the trials three weeks ago. Gomez has said that finding precocious Quarter Horses in the mental aspects of racing is a big key, but his young pupils have shown to have plenty of athletic ability as well.

They have combined to win six of their seven starts and all three have won at least twice.

Dutch Masters III owns both Southern Best, a daughter of second-crop sire Docs Best Card and FG Jess Seis, a gelded son of champion sire Tres Seis, and has won the Kindergarten four times with Gomez as the winning trainer each time.

Erick Gutierrez-Carrillo, Javier Chavez, Carlos Lopez and Jimmy Negrete campaign Docs Fastlane, also by Docs Best Card.

La Feliz Montana Ranch’s La Blue Amore will be one of the favorites in the race, as the Kiddy Up filly has won both of her career starts impressively, confidently, and professionally.

Of the last 10 Kindergarten winners, seven of them have been fillies, including the Gomez-trained La Jaconde last year. La Blue Amore won her debut by 1-¼ lengths and her trial by a half-length. Eduardo Nicasio will ride for trainer Chris O’Dell.

Another filly, Jose Luis Valdez’s Val Frida, enters with the fastest qualifying time after being the surprise package on the night of the trials. The daughter of Stel Corona won in a trial that produced two other finalists, including Legacy Ranch’s Midnite Fling, who was racing for the first time on trial night after a sizzling gate workout on March 27. Now that she has some racing experience, the Apollitical Jess filly could improve in a big way in the final.

Dennis Jensen and Randy Young’s Fire Fast Honey is the other filly in this race. She was second to La Blue Amore in the trials.

In addition to Gomez’s trio, the other young males in this race are Link Newcomb’s Valente One, Jesus Avila and Jesus Cuevas’ Beduino Surprise, and Butch and Stephanie Webb’s Resurrection Man, who is also the only colt in this race.

Beduino Surprise is the only male to qualify as a first-time starter in the trials.
