ALTOONA, IA—JULY 28, 2021—Seven Iowa-bred sprinters, headed by early favorites CR Appollitical Joe and Iris Royal Jess, are entered in Saturday’s 350-yard, $25,000 Cy-Hawk Stakes (R) at Prairie Meadows.
CR Apollitical Joe is a homebred 3-year-old son of world champion Apollitical Jess trained by Jason Olmstead for owners Curt Tobin and Dick Tobin. A finalist in the May 29, $362,000 Heritage Place Derby (G2) at Remington Park, the gelding has earned $130,189 from 10 starts, and his four wins include a half-length victory in the 350-yard, $57,000 Cyclone Derby (R) for Iowa-bred sophomores on July 10.
CR Appollitical Joe drew post 4 and will be ridden by Edwin Escobedo.
Iris Royal Jess races for B/B Wessels LLC from the barn of trainer Alex Wessels. The 6-year-old gray Captain Courage gelding won two stakes during the 2020 Prairie Meadows meet -- the Cy-Hawk Stakes and the 400-yard, $55,000 Terrace Hill Stakes (R).
Iris Royal Jess drew post 7 and will be ridden by Stormy Smith.
