Governor’s Cup Derby, Freshman Stakes Headline The Second Night Of Champions Weekend

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JULY 30, 2021—Following a strong opening night card to California Breeders Champions Weekend on Saturday, a full night of Quarter Horse racing is on tap with 10 races slated for Sunday night. The card will be headed by the $175,000 Governor’s Cup Derby, a pair of Freshman Stakes and the trials to the $55,100 Los Alamitos Claiming Futurity.

The Late Pick Four sequence, which will include the Governor’s Cup Derby and two divisions of the Freshman Stakes, will have an average field size of 8.5 horses per race.

Ed Allred’s Monopolist is the horse to beat in the Governor’s Cup Derby following his breathtaking three length victory in the trials on July 11. The son of Favorite Cartel opened an early daylight advantage and never looked back in route to the most impressive victory of his career.

Trained by James Glenn Jr., Monopolist won the Grade 2 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity last year and earlier this season he won his trial to the Los Alamitos Winter Derby by a length. He will be looking to win for the first time during the California Breeders Champions series after running second in the Freshman Stakes last year.

Owned by the partnership of Bujanda, Encinas, Flores and CD Horses, Inc., Counting The Ways won his trial by a head over El Primero Del Año Derby winner Favorite Colossus, who made up a lot of ground in the final 100 yards. Counting The Ways could improve in the final, as this will be only his second start since running in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity last year. Others in this Derby field include Favorite Colossus, who has shown the ability to finish strongly, and the stakes placed BF Outfoosed.

The $25,000 Freshman Stakes for males has attracted Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity winner Golden Boi, who will look to make it four wins from five career starts. The M&G Farms homebred runner was a daylight winner in the Ed Burke Million and based on that effort, he’s the one to beat here. The field is not short on quality, as Allred’s Cactus Jack is a perfect two-for-two in his career, while stablemates New And Better and Vamoosing have both shown closing speed.

The $25,000 Freshman Stakes for Fillies will be headed by Fred Scane Memorial Stakes winner Hitters Count, who is a perfect three for three on the year. Oscar Parra’s Attack Zone, who won her trial to the Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity and was second in her Ed Burke trial, is another top contender in the Freshman for Fillies, as are Kindergarten finalist La Blue Amore and multiple winners Majority Interest and Cumbia.

The $25,000 Debutante for sophomore fillies will be headed by La Pacifica Handicap winner Chance It Now and Grade 2 futurity finalist Rite On Time. The $25,000 Jens List Memorial Stakes for 3-year-old males will include multiple graded stakes finalist FlyThe Coup and Katella Avenue, who narrowly missed qualifying to the Governor’s Cup Derby.

Twenty-one juveniles will compete the trials to the Claiming Futurity with the horses with the 10 fastest times returning for the final on August 22. Horses cannot be claimed in the trials but will be eligible to be claimed for $12,500 in the final.
