Rich Mountain Top QH Futurity Headlines New Mexico-Bred Stakes Doubleheader Sunday at Ruidoso Downs

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM–JUNE 13, 2022–Ricanelo, a Big Daddy Cartel gelding and a $90,000 yearling purchase by owners Gene Bradley and Tod Bradley at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, is one of 10 New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds entered back in Sunday’s 350-yard, $341,362 Mountain Top Quarter Horse Futurity (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs.

The fastest qualifier from 13 trials contested on June 3, Ricanelo has earned $49,002 from three races in New Mexico and Oklahoma, and his spring resume included a fourth-place finish, three-quarters of a length behind winner Tres Crystals, in the March 19, $441,000 Oklahoma Futurity (G2) at Remington Park.

The gelding scored a half-length victory in the second Mountain Top trial.

Ricanelo drew the rail post and will be ridden by Raul Ramirez Jr. for trainer Trey Wood.

The Bradleys and Wood will also be represented by Reef Ridge, a stakes-placed son of Woodbridge and a $70,000 yearling buy at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale.

Reef Ridge has banked $17,830 from three starts, and his record includes a second-place finish, three-quarters of a length behind winner Teller Ima Eagle, in the March 19, $50,000 Oklahoma Juvenile Stakes at Remington Park.

Reef Ridge drew post 6 and will be ridden by Tanner Thedford.

Other contenders include KJ Daddys Money, a homebred Big Daddy Cartel filly trained by Wes Giles for owners John Lee, Kathy Lee, and Ruben Mares. KJ Daddys Money has earned $10,880 from three outs in New Mexico, and he ran third, one length behind winner Cartel Racer, in the April 3, 300-yard New Mexican Spring Fling Stakes (R) for state-bred 2-year-olds at Sunland Park.

KJ Daddys Money drew post 9 and will be ridden by Cordarelton Benn.

Also on Sunday, Jesses Wish is the early favorite for the 350-yard, $50,000 Mountain Top Juvenile Stakes.

A $50,000 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, Jesses Wish has earned $153,665 from three outs for his owners, Javier M. Chavez and Heysol Howlet.

The gelded son of Jesse James Jr is coming off of a Sunland Park campaign during which he earned a neck victory in the 300-yard, $313,000 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) on April 3.

Jesses Wish drew post 7 and will be ridden by Mario Delgado for trainer James Gonzales II.
