OGDEN, UT—MAY 7, 2020—Seventeen sophomores, headed by stakes winner Thrill Of The Cartel, are entered in Sunday’s 400-yard Adequan Weber Downs Derby Challenge trials at Weber Downs.

A gelded son of the Favorite Trick (TB) stallion Favorite Cartel, Thrill Of The Cartel is trained by Mark Hanson for owners Hanson Racing LLC, Robin Dunn and Kevin Dunn. Thrill Of The Cartel is coming off of a 2-year-old campaign during which he earned $28,425 from six outs and won the 350-yard, $25,000-added John Deere Emerald Downs Juvenile Challenge.

Thrill Of The Cartel drew post 7 and will be ridden by Jesus Canales in the first of two trials.

His seven opponents in the first heat include Luis H. Gonzalez’s Dr Tool, a stakes-placed son of Kiss My Hocks trained by Ramon Mendoza. Dr Tool has banked 36,095 from seven races, and his resume includes a third-place finish in last year’s $246,000 La Fiesta Futurity at Albuquerque Downs.

Dr Tool drew post 4 and will be ridden by Jesus Valenzuela.

The 10 fastest qualifiers from Saturday’s trials will meet in the May 24, $30,000-added Adequan Weber Downs Derby Challenge final.
