La Reina Del Sur 1 Is Back In Corona Chick Handicap

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—NOVEMBER 12, 2020—Abel Reyes' homebred filly La Reina Del Sur 1 returns to action after taking a four-month hiatus from racing when she heads a field of nine in the $25,000 Corona Chick Handicap at 400 yards Saturday at Los Alamitos.

La Reina Del Sur 1 is back on the track for the first time since winning the $25,000 Freshman Stakes on California Breeders Champions Night on July 25. The daughter of Favorite Cartel was the only filly in that race, yet she dominated right from the start on the way to posting a length victory over a field that included eventual PCQHRA Breeders Futurity winner Monopolist.

La Reina Del Sur 1, who also ran fourth in the (GII) Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity earlier this year, flew out of the gate in the Freshman Stakes to open an insurmountable 2 ˝ length lead. She was on cruise control from there, crossing the wire ahead of her rivals to post her third win in five starts this year. The win was also trainer Sally Rivera's first stakes win.

"I've trained mostly Thoroughbreds but had an 870 Quarter Horse that set a track record at Santa Rosa," said Rivera, who has been training horses for 40 years. "I've always had really good owners. That is what counts. I just have a couple of owners. I do it more for fun now."

She is surely having a lot of fun with La Reina Del Sur 1.

Coronado Kiss, a son of leading third-crop sire Coronado Cartel, who looked impressive when winning a trial to the Wild West Futurity, is among the other top contenders in this race.

AP A Special Takeoff, Rox Win and No Questions are among the other seven contenders in this race.
