Moonist Winner Heads Strong Group Ready To Take Off In Flight 109

LOS ALAMITOS' CA—FEBRUARY 2, 2023— Link Newcomb’s Cattail Cove, the 2022 Moonist Award winner, kicks off his 2023 campaign when he takes on a strong group of accomplished runners in the $20,000 Flight 109 Stakes on Saturday night at Los Alamitos.

First post for the 10-race program is 6 p.m. with the Flight 109 set as the final race on the card.

In a great career that has included more than 20 appearances in stakes races, Cattail Cove is a multiple stakes winner and a three-time graded stakes runner-up. Trained by Juan Aleman, the Favorite Cartel gelding ran second in the 2019 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and was part of the 50th running of the Champion of Champions last year.

After posting another strong season that included eight stakes appearances, Cattail Cove received the Moonist Award, which is presented to a top Quarter Horse which showed endurance with success while racing on a competitive level throughout the year like the late Moonist.

The Flight 109 field will include several runners that could challenge for the Moonist title this year. In addition to Cattail Cove, the field will feature Ed Allred’s Up The Ladder, winner of the Dream A Secret and twice a stakes runner-up last year.

Mena, Peneulas, and Zamudio’s razor sharp El Bobito Bet Cartel, who has posted seven straight top three finishes, will also race, and J. Francisco Diaz’s Five Bar Runner, who ran third in last year’s Whosleavingwho Handicap, will also race.

All Ways, Nevada Charles, and Rox Win, three solid stakes runners in 2022, will complete the field.
