Cm Boom Shakalaka Nets the Win in the $14,100 Mail Tribune Handicap at Grants Pass

GRANTS PASS, OR—JUNE 30, 2020—The post-time favorite delivered a slam dunk performance in the $14,100 Mail Tribune Handicap (not black-type) at Grants Pass on Tuesday evening as Cm Boom Shakalaka and jockey Luis Gonzales won gate to wire in an easy victory.

The final time for the 350-yard event was 17.325; the winner earned a 104 speed index.

Cm Boom Shakalaka ($2.80) is trained by Nick Lowe for owner Chris Sutton. The 5-year-old gelding was bred in Oregon by Randy Dickerson, by Carters Cartel and out of the Dash Ta Fame mare Mi Fames a Dandy.

The multiple stakes winner now has 11 wins in 27 starts with $126,297 in career earnings. Cm Boom Shakalaka has also completed in many graded stakes at Los Alamitos, including a second-place finish in the Kaweah Bar Handicap (G3) in 2019.

Jl Rebel and jockey Jaime Lopez led the rest of the field to finish in second place. The 6-year-old gelding is owned and trained by Jaime Lopez, Sr.

Jl Rebel recently won his first stakes race, the Mail Tribune Rogue Dash, also at Grants Pass, last summer. He is four for 11 lifetime with $11,165 in earnings.

Yaqueline Ibarra bred Jl Rebel in Oregon, by Cancino Dash and out of the Shazoom mare Afterglow.

Jesstafiably Jess finished third with Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa aboard. The Washington-bred son of One Sweet Jess is trained by Benito Curiel. He is owned and bred by Malon Cowgill, out of the Strawfly Speical mare Fly Thru Time.

Jesstafiably Jess won the Sun Downs Adequan Derby Challenge last year and represented the region in the Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G3) at Albuquerque in October.

Completing the field were Loosin My Lover, Favorite Bling and L Bar D Genuine Red.
