Appollitical Hawkeye Tops Hawkeye Futurity Trials at Prairie Meadows

ALTOONA, IA—JULY 3, 2020—Two trials at Prairie Meadows on Friday afternoon determined the field for the upcoming $75,555 Hawkeye Futurity, led by fastest qualifier Appollitical Hawkeye. The final will be held on July 24.

The appropriately named fastest qualifier posted a time of 16.995 for 330 yards and earned a 90 speed index as he won the first trial by nearly a length.

Appollitical Hawkeye ($28.70) was ridden by Cristian Esqueda for trainer Alex Wessels and owner Paul Tonderum. The trial win was the gelding’s first career start.

Appollitical Hawkeye was bred in Iowa by Craig Kirby, out of Cartels Belle, by Southern Cartel. Cartels Belle, also bred by Kirby, was a multiple stakes winner with over $100,000 in career earnings. She won the Jim Bader Futurity in 2009 and the Future of Iowa Stakes in 2010.

Cr Appollitical Joe won the second trial as the second fastest qualifier in 17.009 and earned a 90 speed index. Berkley Packer had the call for trainer Jason Olmstead.

The Apollitical Jess gelding broke his maiden in the trial, his third career start. He debuted in a maiden race at Remington and finished third in his trial for the Heritage Place Futurity.

Cr Appollitical Joe is owned and bred by Dick and Curt Tobin in Iowa, out of Lw Evening Lajolla, by Streakin La Jolla. La Evening Lajolla raced exclusively at Prairie Meadows and finished second in the Future of Iowa Stakes in 2008.

Third fastest qualifier Df Fabulous Flare finished just a nose behind Cr Appollitical Joe in the second race with a time of 17.019 and also earned a 90 speed index.

Df Fabulous Flare was ridden by Eugenio Navarrete, Jr. for trainer Ed Hardy and owner Five Guys Racing. He was bred by Darling Farms, by One Fabulous Eagle and out of the First Down Dash mare Nothinlikelovin.

Df Fabulous Flare also debuted at Remington Park this spring and has hit the board twice in his three lifetime starts.
