HOBBS, NM—OCTOBER 19, 2020—Zia Park opened its 2020 live race meet today with a card that included eight trials for the $145,000-added New Mexico Cup Futurity(RG2). The ten fastest qualifiers will return to the Hobbs, New Mexico racetrack on November 9th to vie for the winner's share of the purse going 350 yards.

Making his first start since a very-troubled finish in the $3-million All American Futurity on Labor Day, Eagles N Dragons rolled to an impressive two-length win in the last trial to set the top qualifying mark of :17.713 seconds, a 93 speed index into a 3 mph crosswind .

Jockey Jaime Leos piloted the son of multiple stakes sire Zulu Dragon to his third win in five starts this season for trainer Juan Gonzalez and owner Joe Rios. Bred by Nahum Prieto, from the One Famous Eagle mare Effortless Eagle, Eagles And Dragons also won his All American Futurity trial and Mountain Top NM Bred Futurity trial at Ruidoso over the summer. He has earned $73,600.

Bigg Dee, a stakes winning son leading New Mexico sire Big Daddy Cartel was a neck winner over Dragon On Ice in the fourth trial to get the second fastest time of :17.763 seconds, a 92 speed index.

Bumped at the break, the bay gelding was ridden by jockey Mario Delgado and is trained by James J. Gonzales, II. Rex Wells owns the MJ Farms bred from the Woodbridge mare Miss Woody Dee.

Bigg Dee won the Zia Quarter Horse Juvenile at Ruidoso Downs last summer and has earned $31,840.

Zia Park will host four trials for the New Mexico Cup Derby(RG2) on Tuesday's race card. First post is noon (MDT). The derby trials will be run as races 1 thru 4.
