Madewell Gets Track Record In Grade 1 Cox Ranch Distance Challenge Win

ALBUQUERQUE, NM—OCTOBER 24, 2020—With a beautiful ride under jockey Benito Baca, Madewell easily rolled to a new track record in the $93,605 Grade 1 Cox Ranch Distance Challenge Championship on Saturday at The Downs at Albuquerque.

The 6-year-old son of multiple stakes sire Jess Jones settled on the rail early before making an impressive move to the outside coming off the turn, surpassing the early leaders and rolling to a 2-½ length win. He completed the 870 yards in a quick :44.684 clocking, to break the previous track record of :43.866 seconds established September 2, 2016 by Tty From Mr Pye. He earned a career high 111 speed index.

Trainer Bernard Baca saddled Madewell to his fourth consecutive win over The Downs racing surface for owner-breeders Ray and Davy Madewell. The Oklahoma-bred from the A Streak Of Cash mare Streakin Peacock earned $44,936 to boost his career earning total to $234,280.

A winner of four of seven starts this season, he was also won the Downs at Albuquerque Distance Challenge(G2) and was second in the Remington Park Distance Challenge(G2). Tonight's win surely sewed year-end distance championship honors for the sorrel gelding.

Trainer Cody Joiner saddled runner-up Illtakeyouforaride for owners Illtakeyouforaride Partnership. Kelsi Purcell had the riding call aboard the graded stakes winning FDD Dynasty 6-year-old. Coming off a win in the Lone Star Distance Challenge(G3) in his last start, Illtakeyouforaride earned $19,189 for his effort. Bred by Kirk Goodfellow, from the Mr Jess Perry mare Dashinfordestiny, Illtakeyouforaride has banked $143,012.

Second to Illtakeyouforaride in the Lone Star Distance Challenge(G3), Sw Bullet Proof finished three-quarters back to earn $9,60 for third. Travis Lusk conditions the son of Second Painted Sign for owner Jason Udy. Sherry Wingfield bred the brown gelding in Oklahoma form the Jazzing Hi mare Jazzin Shabby Chic. Jesus Valenzuela rode the $58,626 earner.

High On Chablis, Higher Flyin Eagle, Edelman, Ms Esther and Cm Once In A Bluemoon completed the field.
