Breeder Dan Moon Dominates Spring Maiden Frolic Trials

POCATELLO, ID—MAY 9, 2021—Idaho breeder Dan Moon dominated three trials for the $22,900 Spring Maiden Frolic (not black type) at Pocatello Downs on Sunday, including owning-and-breeding the top qualifier Heza Fired Up.

Moon also bred the second and third fastest qualifiers.

The 10 qualifiers, from three trials contested today by Colts & Geldings who were maidens as of January 1, will return to Pocatello Downs on Saturday, May 22nd to vie for the winner's share of a $22,900 purse going 300 yards.

Moon's lightly raced homebred Hez Fired Up made his first career start in Idaho Sunday under jockey Eric Ayala. The son of multiple stakes sire Kiddy Up raced to a three-quarter length over Tell Tac to set the top mark of :15.657 seconds, equaling a 94 speed index.

Conditioned by trainer Monty Arrossa, Hez Fired Up made two starts as a 2-year-old at Los Alamitos Race Course, finishing second in both. His last start was a trial for the Kindergarten Futurity over a year ago. Out of the Walk Thru Fire mare Fire Fire For Toby, Heza Fired Up has earned $8,274.

Dan Moon-bred Elite Roc Starr was a three-quarter length winner in the last trial for owner Samantha Newbold to score the second-fastest clocking of :17.796, an 89 speed index.

Ridden by jockey Jesus Canales for trainer David Newbold, the Dominyun filly broke her maiden in her 3-year-old debut. Newbold also saddled Quirksome to the 10th fastest qualifying time.

Out of the Red Hot Rhythm mare All Star Elite, Elite Roc Star was unplaced in five starts at 2, but did qualify for consolations to both the Bitterroot Futurity and Crush The Curve Futurity.

The aforementioned Tell Tac, another Dan Moon-bred, held on to the third fastest clocking of :15.800 seconds, after finishing second in the first trial to Heza Fire Up.

Trainer Garth Blattner conditions the son of multiple stakes sire Tac It Like A Man for owner PWWR, LLC. The 4-year-old gelding, out of Just Wanna Teller by Teller Cartel, has placed in six of 13 career starts and earned $6,214. He was a finalist in the Pocatello Downs Juvenile Challenge in 2019. Never T. Marin had the riding assignment.
