Cr Appollitical Joe Prevails in $25,000 Cy-Hawk Stakes at Prairie Meadows, Dead Heat for Place

ALTOONA, IA—JULY 31, 2021—Multiple stakes winner and post-time favorite Cr Appollitical Joe did not disappoint in the feature Quarter Horse race of the evening at Prairie Meadows on Saturday, the $25,000 Cy-Hawk Stakes. The 350-yard event was open to 3-year-old and up Iowa-breds.

Cr Appollitical Joe ($4.20) and Edwin Escobedo ran down Kiss Me Anywhere to take over the lead and win by a half-length in :17.387 for a 103 speed index.

Cr Appollitical Joe is a 3-year-old son of Apollitical Jess trained by Jason Olmstead. He is owned and bred by Dick and Curt Tobin, out of the Streakin LaJolla mare Lw Evening LaJolla, graded stakes placed at Prairie Meadows.

In 11 career starts, Cr Appollitical Joe has earned $142,439 and has five victories. Last year, he won the Hawkeye Futurity and was second in the Jim Bader. As a 3-year-old, he finished fifth in the Heritage Place Derby (G2) and won the Cyclone Derby in his most recent start.

There was a dead heat for second between Kiss Me Anywhere and Iris Royal Jess. The pair hit the wire together in 17.447 and earned a 101 speed index as they put a length and a half between them and the rest of the field.

Kiss Me Anywhere is a 4-year-old Kiss My Hocks colt trained by Clinton Crawford. Daniel Amaya had the call. Summer Hill Farm LLC owns and bred the colt out of Paint Me Anywhere, by Pyc Paint Your Wagon.

Kiss Me Anywhere has earned $127,144 in 15 starts, thanks in part to winning the Jim Bader Futurity in 2019. Earlier this year, he was fifth in the Bob Moore Memorial Stakes (G2) at Remington.

Stormy Smith was aboard Iris Royal Jess for trainer Alex Wessels and owner B/B Wessels LLC. Warren Garrels bred the 6-year-old gelded son of Captain Courage, out of Pure Royal Dash, by Pure D Dash.

Iris Royal Jess has never finished out of the money in 16 lifetime starts, all at Prairie Meadows, including ten wins and$211,522 in earnings. He won the Cy-Hawk Stakes in 2020 before winning the Terrace Hill. He won the Polk County Derby in 2018 and was second in the 2017 Jim Bader Futurity.

Completing the field were Cr Hez the Man, Gracies Tuition and Sweet Twisted Tea. Streakin Jesszee was scratched.
