Trainer Janell Sanderson Banned From Ruidoso Downs

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JUNE 8, 2020—According to an article published on the Daily Racing Form website New Mexico trainer Janell Sanderson has been banned from starting horses at Ruidoso Downs after five horses in her care tested positive for banned medications in recent out-of-competition tests.

The decision takes effect immediately and will result in the withdrawal of three horses trained by Sanderson who qualified for this weekend's $359,069 Mountain Top Futurity(RG2) for New-Mexico Bred 2-year-olds Quarter Horses.

The three horses, Canelloni, Hatch Zulu and Lunas Glitterstar, were not among the five horses that tested positive recently for the bronchial dilator clenbuterol or the muscle-builder zilpaterol.

Sanderson was not permitted to enter Wow What A Dynasty and Grand Ambition in Sunday's Ruidoso Maiden States. Those two horses were also not among the five that tested positive.

All Sanderson horses including those qualified for the Mountain Top Futurity and Ruidoso Maiden Stakes must be moved to trainers approved by the track's stewards before they can be reentered.

Through Sunday Sanderson had won six of 24 starts since the meets opening on May 22.

Ruidoso Downs General Manager Jeff True said trainers at Ruidoso Downs are allowed to have three positive in out-of-competition tests in a 12 month period before they are banned.

Horses that received a positive test will be placed on the steward's list and are not able to start for at least 60 days They have to work before Ruidoso stewards and receive negative tests prior to entry.
