John Mayers, Co-Breeder of Champion Kiss My Hocks Dies
A memorial service will be held August 11 for John Mayers, longtime rancher and co-breeder of champion Kiss My Hocks.

John Mayers, Co-Breeder of Champion Kiss My Hocks Dies

LAREDO, TX—JUNE 9, 2020—John Mayers, affectionately known as “Johnny”, passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, May 27th at the age of 82.

Johnny was born into a ranching family had a lifelong love of ranching, land conservation and horses. He attended Martin High School and graduated in 1955.

He was active in the FFA, earning a Lone Star Farmer Degree. He attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville with a four -year scholarship from the King Ranch. He graduated university in 1959.

After graduation he was in the U.S. Army for four years. He earned the rank of Captain (Airborne). He served as an instructor at West Point and following his service in the Army he had a six-year commitment to the Army Reserve. After leaving the Army, Johnny returned to Laredo to begin his teaching career.

He taught science at Lamar Middle School and Vocational Agriculture at both Nixon High School and Martin High School for a total of eighteen years. Johnny served as the Vocational Director for Laredo ISD for fourteen years.

He retired from education to fulfill his lifelong dream of ranching full time. Johnny was named LIFE 2007 Rancher of the Year. This was a huge honor for him as it recognized his commitment to ranching.

Together with his son Joseph, he branched out into quarter horse racing, another lifelong passion of his. He both bred and raced Quarter Horses and was co-breeder of 2014 AQHA Racing Champion 2-year-old Colt Kiss My Hocks with Tyler Graham. The son of Tempting Dash is out of Mayers mare Romancing Mary by Tres Seis. Kiss My Hocks is currently the #2 Leading Second-Crop Sire of Money Earners.

Johnny will be remembered for always providing for his family. He was a good father, brother, son, mentor, neighbor and friend

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pablo Mayers, Berta Vidaurri Mayers and his brother, Pablo Mayers Jr.

He is survived by his children Joseph (Edna) Mayers, Roberta Anne Mayers, his grandchildren, Krysta Jo Mayers, Roberto Gonzales, Jennelle (Armando) Gutierrez, Liza (William) Mims, great-granddaughter Alexandra Gutierrez and his siblings Virginia Mayers, Patricia Mayers, Anthony (Ruth) Mayers, and Patricia “Patti” Fernandez Mayers.

A Memorial Service will be held at Joe Jackson North Funeral & Cremation Services, 1410 Jacaman Rd, on the anniversary of his birth date, August 11, 2020 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.
