SHELBYVILLE, IN–NOVEMBER 14, 2024–Edgar Diaz has been strong from start to finish in 2024 at Horseshoe Indianapolis. As a result, he earned his first career leading quarter horse jockey title on Thursday at the conclusion of the racing season at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
“I am very grateful for this honor,” said Diaz through translation from Trainer Claudio Barraza. “I am real happy. This is a dream come true and it’s been a goal for me. Today is really special.”
Diaz completes the 2024 racing season with 32 wins and more than $735,000 in purse earnings. Rolando Pina, L.D. Martinez and Diego Villamil were tied for second place, with 21 wins apiece.
Diaz began riding in his native Mexico at Guanajuato in 2018 before coming to the U.S. in 2019. He immediately connected with Trainer Claudio Barraza, winning his fourth career start with the Barraza-trained La Jolla Diamante. Later that year, he won his first stakes race aboard Tres My Heart in the Indiana Grand Classic, also for Barraza. That partnership continues today.
Diaz guided 27 of Barraza’s 31 winners this meet. They won several stakes races, including two with Tres of Blood and three with Mr Michel, 2024 Quarter Horse of the Meet. Diaz is already working with “babies” for Barraza at their base in Connersville at Campos Family Ventures to develop the next round of stars from the Barraza barn.
The 22nd season of live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing concluded Thursday, Nov. 14. Racing returns for the 23rd season on Tuesday, April 15.
