Oh La Surprises in the 89 and Under Stakes at Wyoming Downs

EVANSTON, WY—JULY 16, 2017—The feature race at Wyoming Downs on Sunday was the $16,300 89 and Under Stakes (not black type), with Oh La and jockey C. J. Benn flying home late on the outside for the half-length victory over Dashing Brooks.

Oh La ($22.60) and Benn ran the 400-yard event in 19.891 and earned a 92 speed index. To be eligible for the race, horses could not have earned a speed index of 90 or higher as of January 1, 2017. Oh La had earned an 89 and an 88 as a 2-year-old in 2016; her recent figures of 93 and 94 this year did not count against her.

The daughter of Tr Dasher is out of the Check Him Out mare Proud Checker. She was bred in California by Steve Burns, DVM and is owned by Jeffrey Smith. Glade Van Tassell, tied for first place in the trainer standings at Wyoming Downs, has trained the filly in all her eight lifetime starts.

The 89 and Under win was Oh La’s first time crossing the wire in front; she broke her maiden last time out when the winner was disqualified and she was placed first.

Dashing Brooks and jockey Uriel Dominquez broke first and led for most of the race. The Utah-bred gelding campaigned at Remington, Ruidoso and Lone Star as a 2-year-old before making his 3-year-old debut in Wyoming.

Chancey Spencer trains Dashing Brooks for owner A and C Racing and Roping. The son of One Dashing Eagle was bred by Chad Richard, out of the Brookstone Bay mare Brooks Midnight. Brooks Midnight, also bred by Richard, qualified for the Grade 1 Rainbow Futurity in 2009.

With a career-high 102 speed index earned two starts back, Queen of the Kartel was the post-time favorite in the 89 and Under. The Carters Cartel filly had also defeated several horses in the field in her last start out, an allowance for 3-year-olds and up.

Queen of the Kartel was ridden by Daniel Carillo for trainer Josh Taylor and owner Jerry Chapman. The 3-year-old was bred in Texas by Jimmy and Elaine Coffman, out of Flyin Legal by Illegal Runaway.

Completing the field were Eb Danzing Donajur, Foose Dependent, Jess Chugger, Nsm Jayhawker, Sixy Hero On Fire V, Proud Merrisita and Big Daddy Etb.
