LOS ALAMITOS, CA—NOVEMBER 1, 2017—Bill Absher and Leland Decker’s Chowchilla Chickadee has been one of the most impressive juveniles at Los Alamitos in 2017. The Foose filly out of the Buzz Word mare Buzz Chick is now a perfect three for three in her career with each win better than her last.
Ridden by Cesar De Alba for trainer John Cooper, Chowchilla Chickadee broken her maiden by 2 3/4 lengths on September 9 and then posted back-to-back allowance wins, each by 1 3/4 lengths.
Her allowance win on October 1 was the night’s fastest of four 300-yard clockings. She beat a field that included Sweet 16, who raced in the All American Futurity trials. Chowchilla Chickadee’s 1 3/4 length win on October 29 was just as impressive, as she led by daylight the entire 330-yard race.
"She’s always been very easy to get along with and very professional," De Alba said. "Obviously, she can run quite a bit. It’s too bad she’s not in any futurities, but maybe next year she’ll show them what she’s got. I haven’t even touched her with the whip yet. She’s still learning to run."
Cooper, who has trained champions Chingaderos, Separatist and Moonist, knows that Chowchilla Chickadee still has a long way to go.
"She hasn’t done anything yet," Cooper said. "She’s a good filly, but the class level is what’s important. She hasn’t faced the top futurity horses, but she’s in the 2018 Los Alamitos Winter Derby trials. I’m excited for the owners. You won’t find two better people. When they send me a horse, the horse is exactly how they describe the horse to be."
