Fastest Qualifier Singles Cruise Returns Victorious in Jerry Stojan Memorial at Evergreen

GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB—JULY 27, 2018—Singles Cruise did not disappoint as the fastest qualifier and post-time favorite in the $20,027 Jerry Stojan Memorial Stakes in Grande Prairie. The 2-year-old filly won by a half-length over Special Corona Wave with a final time of 15.680 and speed index of 94 in the 300-yard final.

Singles Cruise was the fastest from two trials held on July 8 with a time of 15.660. The final was originally scheduled for July 22, but the card was canceled due to weather.

Singles Cruise ($4.30), with Alejandro Hernandez up, was a wire-to-wire winner in the eventual final for trainer Janice Sather, who also co-owns with Barry Sather. The 2-year-old Favorite Cartel filly is out of Going Single, by Mr Eye Opener, and was bred in California by Steve Burns DVM.

This was the third lifetime start for the filly; she was fifth in her debut but won her trial by a neck over Ifarm, who returned to finish third in the final.

Special Corona Wave was third in his trial, also his debut, but improved in his second start in Friday’s feature race at Evergreen. The Wave Carver gelding is trained by Webb Les and is owned by Bugle Hill; Juan Apango had the call. Shady Lane Stables bred Special Corona Wave in Alberta, out of the Corona Cartel mare Special Corona.

Second fastest qualifier and second post-time favorite Ifarm finished third, a half-length behind Special Corona Wave.

Ifarm was ridden by Blandford Stewart for trainer Buckey Stockwell, who also owns the gelding with Beverly Stockwell. The son of Coronado Cartel was bred in Oregon by Donald and Peggy Boyle, out of the Mr Eye Opener mare Avery Hope.

Ifarm is still a maiden but finished third in his debut and second in his trial to Singles Cruise.

Completing the field were Timbersknightryder, Mals Sweet Jess, O Kingsley and Zoomn Wave. Hortons Kid Dynamite was scratched.
