ROCK SPRINGS, WY—SEPTEMBER 8, 2019—Brindis Cruz (12-1), under jockey Uriel Dominguez, got up by a neck over pastime favorite Mr Downtown Zip to win the $15,000 Rock Springs Wyoming Bred Derby Sunday afternoon at Sweetwater Downs. Cd Proud Flyin D Kas finished a length off the leaders for third.
Saddled by trainer Jess Matt, Brindis Cruz covered the 400 yard course on a muddy (sealed) racetrack in :19.810 seconds, equaling a 99 speed index into a 10 mph headwind, under rainy skies. It was the second consecutive win and fourth career win for the Lana Matt owned son of multiple stake sire Brindis Por Cayenne.
The late K.C. Carden bred the sorrel gelding from the Check Him Out mare GM Check Here Out. The $6,000 winner's purse boosted the multiple stakes winners' earnings total to $41,631.
Runner-up Mr Downtown Zip broke in under jockey Jose Guzman to finish second and earn $3,000 for owner Raul Moreno. Martha Maldonado trains the Jess Zoomin gelding out of Miss Corona Downtown by The Corona. S Bar S bred the stakes winner of $20,417.
Mr Downtwon Zip earned the race off a win in the Wyoming Downs Renegade Sports Derby in his last start August 18.
Daniel and Carol Lee's Cd Proud Flyin D Kas earned $1,500 for third. Diana Garfias trains with Tyson Lusk getting the riding call aboard the View Me Flying filly out of Jps Super De Lizzie by Super de Kas. Jess and Leslie Makovy bred the stakes winner of $20,355.
Brindis Cruz returned $24.40 to win, $12 to place and $4.40 to show. Mr Downtown Zip paid $5.60 and $5 and Cd Proud Flyin D Kas returned $2.60 to show.
Vvr No Refunds, Cd Oakie Dokie Proud, Ss Happy Dance, A Dash Of Dynasty, Vvr Im Alright, Jewel Diamond Girl and Vvr Im Special Now completed the derby field.
