ALBUQUERQUE, NM—AUGUST 8, 2020—Graded stakes winner Madewell picked up another win Saturday on his way to the top qualifying time from two trials contested on opening day for The Downs at Albuquerque Distance Challenge(G2).
The eight fastest qualifiers will return to The Downs on Sunday, August 23rd to vie for the winner's share of a $50,000 purse going 870 yards. Also at stake is a berth to the $100,000-est. AQHA Distance Challenge Championship(G1) to be run October 24th during the Bank of America Challenge Championships at The Downs.
Under jockey Jorge Bourdieu, Madewell angled in off the rail to complete the 870 yards in :45.188 seconds, equaling a 105 speed index. It was the fifth win in 26 starts for the multiple stakes winner of $150,139. He finished second in the Remington Park Distance Challenge on April 11.
Third in the AQHA Cox Ranch Distance Challenge Championship(G1) at Albuquerque last fall, Madewell races for owners-breeder Ray and Davy Madewell and is conditioned by trainer Bernard Baca. He is out of the A Streak Of Cash mare Streakin Peacock.
Last year Madewell won the Remington Park Distance Championship(G2) and was second in the Downs at Albuquerque Distance Challenge (G3) and the Will Rogers Distance Challenge.
Illtakeyouforaride, a son of world champion FDD Dynasty, was a nose winner in the first trial to get the fourth fastest time of :45.756 seconds, a 98 speed index. Michael Joiner trains the graded-placed 6-year-old for the Illtakeyouforaride Partners.
Kirk Goodfellow bred the brown gelding in Oklahoma from the Mr Jess Perry mare Dashingfordestiny. He has earned $105,074.
