RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM-MAY 17, 2020—A total of 278 2-year-olds, headed by the graded stakes placed Dangerous Cartel, has been entered in this weekend's 350-yard Ruidoso Futurity (G1) trials at Ruidoso Downs.
Fourteen heats are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, starting at 12 p.m. (MDT) each day. The five fastest qualifiers from Friday's and Saturday's trials will meet in the June 7 $1-million Ruidoso Futurity final.
Dangerous Cartel is a bay son of Coronado Cartel trained by Clint Crawford for owner Bill W. Underwood. The colt has earned $155,842 from three starts, all in Oklahoma, and he is coming off of a second-place finish, a nose behind winner Eye Work For You, in the April 18, 330-yard Remington Park Futurity (RG1) for Oklahoma-breds.
Dangerous Cartel drew post 3 and will be ridden by James Flores in Friday's 13th heat.
Sophia Maria, a training-race winner on May 6, drew post 7 and will be ridden by Alan Hernandez in Friday's seventh trial. A homebred daughter of world champion Apollitical Jess trained by Wes Giles for owner Ruthardt-Wood Quarter Horses GP, the bay filly posted the fastest schooling-race time that day, covering 250 yards in :13.52.
Saturday's trials are headed by Jettz, a homebred One Fabulous Eagle gelding campaigned by Bobby D. Cox. Jettz ships in from Oklahoma, and he is coming off of a fifth-place finish, a half of a length behind winner Eye Work For You, in the Remington Park Futurity (RG1).
An earner of $64,034 from just two outs, Jettz drew post 9 and will be ridden by Francisco Calderon in Saturday's second heat.
Cyber Monday, a recent training-race winner at Ruidoso Downs, will make his parimutuel race debut in Saturday's first trial. A $140,000 purchase at last year's Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, Cyber Monday is trained by Sergio Ibarra for owners LOS LLC and Abelardo F. Gallegos. The Favorite Cartel colt posted the fastest schooling-race time from May 7, covering his 250-yard trip in :13.78.
Cyber Monday drew post 10 and will be ridden by Sergio Becerra Jr.
The Ruidoso Futurity is the first leg of Ruidoso Downs' All American Juvenile Triple Crown and is followed by the July 19, $1-million Rainbow Futurity (G1), and the September 7, $3-million All American Futurity (G1).
