VINTON, LA—JULY 28, 2020—A total of 171 Louisiana-bred 2-year-olds, headed by graded stakes winners El Camino CL and Sir Louisiana Dash, are entered in this weekend’s trials for the Million-Dollar Lee Berwick Futurity (RG1) at Delta Downs.
Twenty 350-yard trials are carded, 10 on Friday and 10 on Saturday. First post time each night is 6:15 p.m. (CDT).
A gelded son of Sir Runaway Dash trained by Jesus M. Marquez for owner Rogelio Marquez Jr., Sir Louisiana Dash will be stretching out in distance off of his half-length victory in the 330-yard, $358,000 Louisiana Breeders’ Laddie Futurity (RG2) at Delta Downs on the Fourth of July.
Sir Louisiana Dash has won both of his starts and has earned $184,990. The gelding drew post 7 and will be ridden by Antonio Alberto in Friday’s 10th trial.
El Camino CL is a homebred Heza Fast Dash colt racing for Delfino Lozano IV from the barn of trainer Jose Luis Sanchez III. El Camino CL has banked $187,223 from four outs, and his three wins include a neck victory in the 300-yard, $315,000 Mardi Gras Futurity (RG2) at Louisiana Downs in March.
El Camino CL drew post 2 and will be ridden by Eddie Sanchez in Saturday’s first heat.
Other prominent state-bred 2-year-olds entered in the Lee Berwick Futurity trials include Jose U. Oviedo’s Ought To Go Tee and Jose H. Rodriguez’s Denalia Sweet Jess. A gelded son of Tee Cos trained by Fernando Lopez, Ought To Go Tee is coming off of a second-place finish to Sir Louisiana Dash in the Laddie Futurity.
Ought To Go Tee will be ridden by Rolando Cabrera from post 4 in Friday’s eighth trial.
Denalia Sweet Jess will be ridden by Modesto Pina from post 8 in Friday’s third heat. A $9,000 purchase at last year’s Louisiana QHBA Yearling Sale, the One Sweet Jess colt is trained by Wendy Garcia for owner Jose H. Rodriguez, and his record includes a third-place finish, a neck behind winner El Camino CL, in the Mardi Gras Futurity.
The five fastest qualifiers from each night of trials will meet in the August 22, Lee Berwick Futurity (RG1)Lee Berwick Futurity final.
