OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 13, 2012—The Mothers’ Day feature at Remington Park was around the turn at 870 yards. A field of seven took part in the $27,500 allowance race that offered Apollo Rocks the opportunity to get away from tough stakes company.
In his last start, Apollo Rocks was last of seven, over eight lengths behind De Passem Okey, the 2-time defending American Quarter Horse Association Distance Champion. Prior to the seventh-place finish in the Pauls Valley Handicap, Apollo Rocks had won a starter-allowance race here in March.
Relishing an attempt away from stakes foes, Apollo Rocks jumped immediately to the lead and never looked back while winning by two lengths. Ridden by Benny Landeros, a regular in the Remington Park Thoroughbred Season, Apollo Rocks was in command throughout while handling the distance in :44.907 seconds over a fast track.
URA Champ was the runner-up while Carny Streakin Dash gained late for third. DM Shaman, the heavy 3-5 wagering favorite, ran fourth.
Dispatched from the starting gate at 8-1 odds, Apollo Rocks paid $18.40 to win, $14.40 to place and $13.60 to show. URA Champ returned $5.80 to place and $5.80. Carny Streakin Dash paid $4.60 to show.
Owned by Bob Knight of Claremore, Okla. and trained by Sam Howard, Apollo Rocks won his sixth race from 29 career starts and his third at Remington Park. The first-place check of $15,942 placed his career earnings just under the $100,000-mark at $98,589.
