Lil Kool Wagon Sires Iowa Stallion QH Futurity and Derby Winner

ALTOONA, IA—SEPTEMBER 3, 2017—Second crop sire Lil Kool Wagon dominated the Iowa QH Futurity and Derby Sunday afternoon at Prairie Meadows. The son of leading sire Pyc Paint Your Wagon sired the winner of the $91,852 futurity and the first and second finishers in the $52,834 derby.

Iowa Stallion QH Futurity

Rakin In Jo rallied strongly under jockey Cody Smith to defeat Shake It For Deb by a head in the $91,852 Iowa Stallion QH Futurity. Sweet Twisted Tea finished half-a-length back in third.

Jason Olmstead saddled the daughter of Lil Lil Kool Wagon to her first win, in three starts, for owner/breeder Wayne Garner. The bay filly clocked a :18.009 time for the 350 yards into a 10 mph crosswind.

Out of the Special Leader mare, Chargin To The Lead, Rakin In Jo earned $41,333 for the winning effort.

Shake It For Deb picked up $16,533 for her second-place effort. Stormy Smith had the riding call aboard the son of Just Amazing Jess for trainer Regina Wessels. A homebred for Larry and Regina Wessels, Shake It For Deb is out of the Royal Shake Em mare Shake Yor Moneymaker.

Jason Olmstead saddled third-place finisher Sweet Twisted Tea for owner/breeder Richard Tobin. Berkley Packer had the riding assignment aboard the Sweet First Down gelding from the Corona Cartel mare Dashing On The Moon. He earned $9,185.

Iowa Stallion QH Derby

A determined Lil Stepper, under jockey Jorge Torres, held off Lil Kool Jess by a neck to win the $52,834 Iowa Stallion QH Derby Sunday afternoon. Miss Alice Grace finished a head back in the blanket finish to get third.

Saddled by Stacy Charette-Hill, Lil Stepper rolled over the 400 yards in :20.081 seconds to get his second career win. Last year the black gelding finished second to Kool Lil Jess in the Iowa Stallion QH Futurity.

The son of multiple stakes sire Lil Lil Kool Wagon races for owners Michael Pohl and Bob Urich. Bred by Urich, the $21,134 winners' purse doubled his earnings to $44,051.

Last year's futurity winner Kool Lil Jess settled for a second-place derby check worth $8,982. Tony Dean Jones conditions the daughter of Lil Lil Kool Wagon for himself and Ricky Neff. Bred by Kevin Heims, from the Sixes Jess mare Jess Shine, Kool Lil Jess has banked $53,565. Cody Smith was up.

Charlton Hunt saddled third-place finisher Miss Alice Grace for owner/breeder Larry Bain. Storm Smith was aboard the Jess Racy filly out of Beduinos Heart by Chicks Beduino. She picked up $5,283 for the effort.

Mga Lil Kool Wilena, Mr Special Wagon, Foxys Lil Wagon, Hail Yez Jess, Crusin The Lake, Trs Just Like Mike and Las Miss Jessie completed the field.
