Fastest Qualifier Jess A Lil Fishy Wins Elko Quarter Horse Derby

ELKO, NV—SEPTEMBER 4, 2017—Fastest qualifier Jess A Lil Fishy went all out, under jockey Jesus Valenzuela, to defeat Kono by half-a-length in the $21,000 Elko Quarter Horse Derby Monday afternoon at the Elko County Fair.

Saddled by Fred Olmos, Jess A Lil Fishy completed the 400 yards in :19.563 seconds to earn a 109 speed index. It was the fifth career win for the daughter of Apollitical Jess. The $18,000 winners' purse boosted her career total to $20,959.

Joseph Ward owns the Ontario-bred filly from the Fishers Dash mare Lil Fishy. She has compiled a (14) 5-3-1 record. Dream Chaser Farm is the breeder.

Stephen Larsen's homebred Kono earned $6,600 for second. Pedro Gonzalez had the riding assignment for trainer Matt Larsen. Bred in Idaho, the Dashair filly is out of Italian Princess by Blushing Bug.

Ktmakinataxreturn finished three-quarters back in third-place for owners Kim and Les Sweeting and Jere Brinkerhoff. Also, trained by Brinkerhoff, the daughter of Maknmoves was ridden by jockey Dallas Erickson. Kory and Candus Trapp bred Ktmakinataxreturn in Utah from the Lanes Lenister mare Lanella.

Sr Mighty Leader, A Stubby Corona, Numaga, Modelo Cartel and Oh La completed the field. Big Daddy Etb and Crown Pointe were both scratched.
