Another Chick Flick Tops Qualifiers To Mountain Top Futurity at Ruidoso Downs

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JUNE 1, 2018—Joe K. Rios’ Another Chick Flick has gone from blindness to being the fastest qualifier to the $345,175 Mountain Top Futurity for New Mexico-breds on Friday afternoon.

It is estimated that she has full vision in her left eye and 90 percent vision in her right eye, according to the horse’s racing manager Wendy Miller.

It’s been quite and journey for Another Chick Flick, however it paid off when she rebounded from a poor performance at Sunland Park to win her Mountain Top Futurity trial by one length under jockey Cipriano Uscanga Vidana. Her time of :18.049 topped the 10 trials.

Jockey Adrian Ramos rode Jess Fire Chick to the second fastest time in the closing trial.

"It is just awesome," said Miller. I’m so excited." She got bumped in her first race and (trainer) Wes (Giles) said to just be patient."

The crew around the First Moonflash-sired Another Chick Flick has been patient with her since they obtained her privately last summer. "She was really thin and blind," said Miller. "We really liked the way she moved. We took it very easy with her."

Giles also saddled second-fastest qualifier Jess Fire Chick, owned by Mike Abraham and Paul Blanchard. The $5,000 Ruidoso New Mexico-Bred Sale bargain made her debut in the Mountain Top trials and proved to be much the best. A daughter of Jess A Chicks, Jess Fire Chick flew to an early lead and that lead kept growing. She crossed under the wire one-and-one-half lengths in front with a time of :18.051, just missing her stablemate’s top time.

R.D. Hubbard and Paul Blanchard’s Whooz Your Daddy ran a strong race in his debut to grab the third-fastest time of :18.070. The Mike Joiner-trained son of Big Daddy Cartel was ridden by G.R. Carter Jr. to the three-quarter-length victory.

Leading third-crop sire Big Daddy Cartel sired four of the 10 qualifiers. First Moonflash and Jesse James Jr had two each.
