Jess Versiontino Takes By By JJ, Eagles First Prey Wins Bobby Crenshaw

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JULY 28, 2018—Orono Racing, LLC's Jess Versiontino held safe runner-up Wood Be A Superstar and third-place runner Daddys Wine to win the $50,000 By By JJ on Saturday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

Also on Saturday's program was the $20,000 Bobby Crenshaw won by Eagles First Prey.

The By By JJ is contested by two-year-old New Mexico-breds over 400 yards.

Jess Versiontino won by one-half length and it was only a nose between Wood Be A Superstar and Daddys Wine.

The Gaston Valenzuela-trained Jess Versiontino burst from the starting gate with a wide running lane and went straight to the lead. The colt had a clear advantage and was able to last for the win in :19.836 under Federico Martinez.

A son of Winners Version and out of Cmon Jesses Girl, Jess Versiontino now has two wins and three seconds from five starts and is now a stakes winner. He was also second in the $121,000 New Mexico Breeders Futurity at SunRay Park.

A $4,000 purchase at the Ruidoso New Mexico-bred Sale, Jess Versiontino is proving to be a bargain.

"I saw his momma run and liked her," said owner Missael Orona. "So for $4,000 I took a shot and now we are running with the big boys."

Dan Newby bred Jess Versiontino's dam who is a daughter of leading New Mexico sire by Jesses James Jr.

Aldai Transport's runner-up Wood Be A Superstar, trained by Blane Wood, has a two wins and a pair of seconds in his five starts. He was a $33,000 Ruidoso New Mexico-bred Sale purchase.

The gelded son of Woodbridge from the Tres Seis mare Starsmith. Was bred by MJ Farms. He earned $10,000 for the effort.

D. and S. Barrett, J&SM, Inc. and Ralph Nix, Jr.'s Daddys Wine, a $50,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase, made a big run late in the race to get third place. The Fred Danley-trained gelding came off a one-half length win in his Zia Futurity trial.

Also bred by MJ Farms, Daddys Win is out Fine Wines by First Down Dash. He picked up $5,000 for the effort.

Bobby Dan Crenshaw Memorial

In the Bobby Crenshaw, run over the rare distance of 1,000 yards for thoroughbreds and quarter horses, the quarter horse Eagles First Prey ran like a thoroughbred to get the win.

Under a heady ride by Benito Jude Baca, Michael Martinez's Eagles First Prey got through on the rail in the stretch to rally for the decisive one-length win.

Eagles First Prey, a son of leading sire One Famous Eagle, covered the 1,000 yards in :53.026.

The Martin Orona Jr. owned and trained thoroughbred Caminetto finished second by neck over Richard Sedillo and Phyllis Wolfe's thoroughbred First Place.

The Issac Martinez-trained Eagles First Prey, a six-year-old gelding by One Famous Eagle, has been competing in 870-yard races. Two races before the Bobby Crenshaw, he was second at the $10,000 claiming level and then was fourth in an allowance race at Ruidoso Downs on June 24.

Burnett Ranches LLC bred Eagles First Prey in Texas from the Dash For Cash mare Classy Cashy. The $12,000 winners' purse boosted his career mark to $97,162.
