Walcott Wins Third Straights, Sets Top Qualifying Time For Altoona Derby

ALTOONA, IA—SEPTEMBER 28, 2018—Getting this third consecutive win, stakes winner Walcott posted the top qualifying time for the $100,000-est. Altoona Derby Friday night following a 1-3/4 length trial win at Prairie Meadows.

Ridden by jockey Mauro Salcedo, Walcott got good speed early to clear the field and stop the timer in the fastest time of :19.812 seconds. Trainer Alejandro Chavez saddled the son of multiple stakes sire Tee Cos to his fourth career win in eight starts for owner Pedro Gutierrez Marquez.

Bred in Oklahoma by Lyle Guillory, Walcott entered the trials off a win in the Mile High Derby on August 12th at Arapahoe Park. Out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Jess Maganette, the bay colt has earned $44,679.

Gopher State Derby winner First Of 15 cruised to a three-quarter length in the closing trial to record the second fastest time of :19.915 seconds.

Jason Olmstead trains the daughter of leading sire Apollitical Jess for owner Richard Tobin. Bred by James and Marilyn Helzer, First Of 15 has compiled a (18) 6-3-1 record and banked more than $117,000 this season.

A sister to 2018 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity winner Lynnder 16, First Of 15 is out of the Corona Cartel mare Tinys Corona Queen.

Jockey Christian Esqueda also qualified 9th fastest qualifier Eagle Deluxe for trainer Jason Olmstead.

Donald Cavenaugh's multiple stakes winning Valiant Hero filly Weetonas Lawfawn won the first trial for trainer Clinton Crawford with the third fastest time of :20 flat.

Bonifacio Quiroz rode the half-sister to 2018 Heritage Place Derby(G3) winner Pyc Fun N Fancy. The bay filly entered the trials off a win in the Jack Brook Stakes at Remington Park in May. Bred in Oklahoma by Weetona Stanley, from the Mr Jess Perry mare First Prize Fancy, Weetonas Lawfawn has earned nearly $127,000.

Gene Cox's Hot Dam Bam A Lam was a half-length winner the third trial to set the 7th fastest time of :20.050. Trainer Donnie Lee Strickland conditions the son of multiple stakes sire Captain Courage.

Third in the aforementioned Jack Brooks Stakes in his last start, Hot Dam Bam A Lam was ridden by jockey Lucas Constantin. Out of the Hot Colours mare Hot Nova, the black gelding has earned $108,231.

The 10 fastest qualifiers from Friday's four trial races will return to Prairie Meadows on Saturday, October 13th to vie for the winner' share of a $170,000-est. purse going 400 yards.
