RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—AUGUST 16, 2019—Mark and Annette McCloy's Mister Riptide powered to the fastest-qualifying time on the first of two-days of trials to the Grade 1, $3-million All American Futurity on Friday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

There were 13 440-yard trials on Friday afternoon and another 13 440-yard trials will be contested on Saturday afternoon. The horses with the five-fastest times on each day qualify to race in the 440-yard All American Futurity on Labor Day. The All American Futurity winner earns $1.5 million.

The horses with the next five-fastest times on each day gain preference to compete in the $200,000 All American Juvenile, also on Labor Day.

First post time on Saturday is noon and also on Sunday for the trials to the Grade 1, $1,550,855 All American Derby.

Mister Riptide, the 3-10 favorite, raced from the inside post position while TYKHE Racing, LLC's My Fast Prize started from the second post position.

The Ricky Ramirez-ridden Mister Riptide prevailed in their duel by one-half length and the two horses established the top-two qualifying marks. Mister Riptide, from the J.J. Gonzales stable, was timed in :21.681 while the Alan Hernandez-ridden My Fast Prize was clocked in :21.736.

"(Mister Riptide) wasn't standing too well in the gate and missed the start," Ramirez said. "In the second jump I could feel his power and he made the lead about 100 yards from the finish."

Mister Riptide dominated the $434,210 Zia Futurity for New Mexico-breds in his previous start and showed that he could successfully compete against open company with that two-and-one-half length victory. He established the fastest-qualifying time to the Zia Futurity and won his trial by two-and-three-quarter lengths.

The gelding by Woodbridge won his debut on May 31 by one-and-one-half lengths and established the third-fastest qualifying mark to the $404,357 Mountain Top Futurity for New Mexico-breds. He sustained his only defeat from five career stars when he finished fifth in the Mountain Top Futurity. The $22,000 Ruidoso New Mexico Bred Sale graduate was bred by MJ Farms from the Ocean Runaway mare Ms Ripdite.

My Fast Prize is still winless from four starts, however showed he can compete at the highest level with his game second-place effort behind Mister Riptide. The Wes Giles-trained gelding by Mr Jess Perry was second in his trial to the Grade 1, $1-million Rainbow Futurity in his previous start.

Weetona Stanley bred the $69,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale graduate from the Corona Cartel mare Coronas Fast Prize.

Jose Guzman and Rito Sosa's Mr Jess Jenkins pulled off a 12-1 upset in his trial while racing to the third-fastest qualifying mark of :21.751. The Marcos Carrizales-trained gelding by Apollitical Jess scored his first win in his fourth career start.

"He had a little bump at the start," jockey James Flores said. "He had a quarter mile to get going and he got going in a hurry.

"He was my favorite early in the year. He was gelded and that helped his mind."

V. H. Harman Jr. and Robert Moudy bred the $40,000 Heritage Place September Yearling Sale graduate in Oklahoma from Fetching Image by Dashing Cleat.

JF Racing Farm, LLC's Avyator, trained by Jimmy Padgett, won the 12th trial by one-and-one-half lengths under Rodrigo Sigala Vallejo with the fourth-fastest time of :21.808.

The son of One Famous Eagle was winless in his three previous starts, however qualified for the $100,000 Rainbow Juvenile. Bobby D. Cox bred the $68,000 TQHA Yearling Sale gradate from the Royal Quick Dash mare Quick Moon Sign.

H. Kent Creel's homebred Elm Creek Khrome won his trial with the fifth-fastest time of :21.877 at 40-1 odds. The Jose Amador Alvarez ridden son of Krash Cartel scored by a neck over Rainbow Futurity winner Uncle D, the 1-5 favorite.

In his only other start, Elm Creek Khrome was third in a Ruidoso Downs' maiden race.

"He ran huge," trainer Bret Vickery said. "I always thought he could run, but I sat on him. The owner wanted to give him only one or two outs before the trials. It was a good plan."

The Texas homebred is out of Jess Love To Fly by Fly Jess Fly.
