Strong In Her Work, Unavailable Carries Form To Debut Victory

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MARCH 21, 2021—Just like she did in her gate workout on March 6, David Hinkins’ Unavailable turned on the speed shortly after the start in route to winning her racing debut by a neck against five other solid 2-year-olds on Sunday at Los Alamitos.

Purchased for $17,000 at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale, Unavailable has shown in both her work and first outing that she has the capability to be a late threat in her races.

"When she broke okay, I thought we had a shot," said trainer Adan Farias. "I was happy with the result. We bought this one for Senator David Hinkins at the Sale."

Hinkins, a member of the Utah State Senate since 2009, has had some nice juveniles at Los Alamitos in the past. Hinkins and his brother, Ross, campaigned the Farias-trained First Down Illusion, who won the 2010 Ed Burke Million Futurity on the way to earning over $500,000. Few horses ever reach the heights that First Down Illusion achieved over a decade ago, but Unavailable will certainly give it a go for Hinkins and Farias.

"She’s going in the Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity trials (on April 25)," Farias added. "After that we’ll go in the Ed Burke trials in June if everything goes okay. We’re happy. My other horse in this race (Western Icon) got knocked around hard. It’s a long season. In their gate workS, the two of them (Unavailable and Western Icon) weren’t very sharp out of the gate, but they were making up a lot of ground late. They impressed me the way they went down the racetrack."

Ridden by Cesar Franco, Unavailable covered the 220 yards in :12.277. Bred by Reliances Ranches LLCs, the filly is by last year's leading first-crop sire Jess Good Candy and out of graded stakes placed Corona Cartel mare Shades Of Blues Girl.

Dutch Masters III’s homebred Woman Secret finished second with Ed Allred’s Round About finished third. Steamy Secret, Western Icon and The Kids A Cowboy completed the field.
