SELMA, TX—JULY 26, 2019—One stumbled at the start and the other bobbled the break but Fm Cartel Rock and Gianni Moons U battled it out in the last of four trials Friday night to get the top two qualifying times for the Adequan Retama Park Derby.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to Retama Park on Saturday, August 17th to vie for the winner's share of a $25,000-added purse as well as earn a starting spot in the $150,000-est. Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G3) on Saturday, October 26th at The Downs at Albuquerque on Bank of America Challenge Championship Night.
Under jockey Antonio Alberto, Fm Cartel Rock defeated Gianni Moons U by a neck to post the top qualifying time of :19.864 seconds, a 97 speed index. Trainer Robi Meche saddled the One Sweet Jess colt to his third career win for owner Jose Fabian Hernandez.
Steve D. Burns, DVM bred the sorrel colt in California from the Corona Cartel mare Remember The Cartel. He has earned just over $19,000.
Gianni Moons U, a finalist in the RG3 TQHA Sale Futurity, last year hung on to get the second fastest time of :19.920 seconds, a 96 speed index. Josue Ponce trains the daughter of One Famous Gianni for owner Marcelo Sergio Guerrero. Jose Espinosa bred the $20,880 earner in Texas form the Moon Shake Em mare Chalinashake.
