ELKO, NV—AUGUST 27, 2010—Sheza Bad Habit held the Elko County Fairgrounds 440 yard track record for only one race on Friday. A Royal Dervish scored a 1½ length victory in the second of two trials to the $57,500 Bank of America Elko County Challenge Championship to take the track record from her.
Racing for Bob and Scott Giltner, A Royal Dervish ran off with his third straight victory to set the top qualifying time of :21.320 seconds.
One race earlier, Shez A Bad Habit picked up her fifth win in six starts this season with a track record setting performance of :21.365 seconds in the first trial.
The previous track record of :21.550, set on September 6, 1992 by Broadford Claret, had stood for almost 18 years.
Bred in Washington by Abigail Kawananakoa, the Giltner's Royal Miracle Dip gelding earned a 117 speed index for the effort. Picking up his sixth career win in 21 starts the 5-year-old is trained by Kurt Calton and ridden by Jeff Jerman. He has earned nearly $33,000.
Sheza Bad Habit has been almost perfect this season for owner Alvin Jones. Bred by Vessels Stallion Farm, LLC, the Looking For Chicks filly won four straight races, including the Merial Sun Downs Distaff Challenge at Sun Downs, before finishing third in her last start on June 26th.
Trained by Bret Vickery and ridden by Paul Greene, Sheza Bad Habit has earned speed indexes of 101, 115, 111, 115, 111 and 116 in her last six outs. The 3-year-old has earnings of just under $38,000.
The ten fastest qualifiers will return on September 6th to vie for the winner's share of the Bank of America Elko County Challenge Championship and hopes of picking up a berth to the $350,000 Guaranteed Bank of America Challenge Championship(G1).
The championship race, which also carries an invite for the winner to the Champion of Champions(G1), will be held November 19th during the Bank of America Challenge Championship Night at the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans.
