Honeys Painted Pop Dominates John Deere Evergreen Juvenile Challenge Final

GRANDE PRAIRIE, ALB—AUGUST 23, 2019—In only his second career start Honeys Painted Pop was much the best as he defeated fastest qualifier Light Footed by 1-˝ lengths in the $34,581(US) John Deere Evergreen Juvenile Challenge Friday night at Evergreen Park.

Under jockey D.I. Benitez, Honeys Painted Pop completed the 350 yards in :18.346 seconds into a 15 mph headwind. Honeys Painted Pop entered the final with the fifth fastest qualifying time after finishing second a troubled second in his August 3 trial.

Trainer Buckey Stockwell saddled the son of leading sire Pyc Paint Your Wagon for himself and Tracey Beckstead and Bob Perlich. Gary Kurz bred the brown gelding in Oklahoma from the Gol mare Gols Honey Money Pop. The $20,000 Heritage Place September Yearling Sale graduate earned $16,600 for the effort. The win also includes a berth to the $125,000-est. John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship(G2) to run on October 26th at The Downs at Albuquerque.

California-bred Light Footed earned $7,809 for owner-trainer William Leech. Richardo Moreno had the riding call aboard the Stel Corona filly out of Chickafirst by First Down Dash. Edward C. Allred is the breeder.

Tom Kenway's homebred Double Cruise finished a neck back for third, earning $3,358(US). Trevor Simpson rode the son of Bd Cruiser from the Eye Take Time mare Eye Cruise. Kenway is also the trainer.

Suits and Eyesa Cruiser completed the field. Allthespeedyouneed, Quarter Sawn and Clear To See were scratched.
