Charlies Fury Dominates in Adequan Will Rogers Derby Challenge

CLAREMORE, OK—SEPTEMBER 22, 2019 —Cruising to a two-length lead, Charlies Fury was the easy winner of the $40,953 Adequan Will Rogers Derby Challenge, the third of four regional Challenge qualifiers at Will Rogers on Sunday afternoon.

Charlies Fury ($2.80) and Agustin Silva stopped the clock in 19.648 for 400 yards and earned a 103 speed index.

In his previous start, Charlies Fury was third in the Heritage Place Derby (G3) at Remington. As a 2-year-old, he was second in the Black Gold Championship Futurity at Will Rogers last fall. This was his first start in a Challenge race.

Charlies Fury is trained by Michelle Hurdle for owners and breeders Tom and Kathleen McNally. He was bred in Oklahoma, by Furyofthewind and out of Jess Charlena, by Take Off Jess.

Runner-up Miss Perrys Tres was no match for the winner today but maintained second-place by a neck over fast-closing Heroes Image in third place.

Jimmy Brooks had the call on Miss Perrys Tres for trainer Eddie Willis and owner Larry Rice. The Tres Seis filly was bred in Oklahoma by Flag Ranch LLC, out of Mr Perrys Wine, by Mr Jess Perry.

The filly has raced exclusively in trials or stakes in her career and was fifth in the Easy Jet Stakes at Remington in 2018 and in the Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Derby (G3) this spring.

Third-place finisher Heroes Image is now stakes placed in his first career stakes effort. The Valiant Hero gelding was ridden by Mario Delgado for trainer Amanda Tongay, who also co-owns with Jordyn Prock. He was bred in Oklahoma by Christie and Mikel Donahue, out of Corona Mit Go, by Pyc Paint Your Wagon.

Completing the field were Might B Magic, Devil of Ramadi, Throw Th Dice, Smokin Dynasty and Tac My Wagon.
