Juno Jess Surprises In Roche Equine Futurity Final, Stellur Gets Track Record in Merial QH Derby

JEROME, ID—JUNE 18, 2017—Juno Jess bounced off a third-place effort in the June 4th trials to get the nod over Super Starr in the $16,850 Roche Equine Futurity Sunday afternoon at the Jerome Fair Grounds. Another longshot Dynasty Darling finished 1¼ lengths back in third.

Ridden by jockey Never Marin, Juno Jess dueled throughout before getting his neck in front with a :17.658 clocking, a 105-speed index with an 8-mph tailwind, for the 350-yard course.

Trainer Ricardo Castillo saddled the son of Jess Zoomin to his second win in four starts for owner Julian Pinkham. Bred in Texas, from the Mr Eye Opener mare Junos Eye, the sorrel gelding picked up $6,740 for the win.

Bred by Casey Humphrey, Juno Jess was a finalist in the Hadley/Giles Memorial Futurity consolation in his second start this year.

Runner-up Super Starr races for owner/breeder Dan Moon and trainer David Greene. Cordarelton Benn rode the son of Hadtobenuts from the Red Hot Rhythm mare All Star Elite. The brown gelding picked up $3,370 for his effort.

Also trained by Ricardo Castillo, Dynasty Darlin is an Oklahoma-bred daughter of world champion sire FDD Dynasty owned by BNB Racing Inc. Jesus Valenzuela rode the brown filly from the Corona Cartel mare Corona Darlin. Bred by Bird Ranch, Dynasty Darlin earned $1,685.

First Prize Star, Royal Tricky Lady, Crown Him Twice, Miss Czech and Dublin Dynamite completed the field.

Stellur Wins Merial Quarter Horse Derby

A pair of Stel Corona 3-year-old geldings battled to the finish on Sunday when Stellur got his neck in front of Crown Pointe to win the $9,700 Merial Quarter Horse Derby (not black type) Sunday afternoon a Jerome Downs. Our Second Legend was a length back for third.

Under jockey Uriel Dominguez, Stellur rolled to a new 350 yard track record when he recorded a :17.414 clocking to earn a 112 speed index with an 8 mph tailwind.

The previous record of :17.562 seconds was set June 19, 2011 by Ocean Runner.

Monty Arrossa saddled the winner for owner Five Livestock Company LLC. Bred in Colorado by Paul Jones and Vista Equine Colorado, the gray gelding is out of Rw Red Wave by Wave Carver.

Stel Corona has compiled a (14) 4-4-1 record and used the $3,880 Merial winner's purse to boost his earnings total to $23,679.

Second-place finisher Crown Pointe would have also lowered the previous track record when he recorded a :17.465 clocking to earn a 110-speed index.

Racing for owners Scott and Sherry Erickson and trainer Guy Weeks, Crown Pointe entered the race off the fastest qualifying time June 4th when he defeated Stellur by a head.

Jockey Dallas Erickson was rode the Stel Corona gelding out of Quickie In The Snow by Snowbound (TB). Jones, Burns, Aldstadt and Thompson bred the gray in California. He picked up $1,940 for the effort.

Nakia Ramirez had the riding call aboard third-place finisher Our Second Legend for trainer-and-breeder Freddy Olmos. Martin Gomez owns the son of second crop sire Paintyourownwagon from the Corona Czech mare Czech Royal Camilla. Still winless in three lifetime starts, Our Second Legend earned $970.

Rumpled Britches, Md Sweet Baby Kash, La Formenta and Outback Zack completed the official order of finish. Tyed Won On was scratched.
