Nsm Jayhawker Impresses In Gary Waite Maiden Memorial

EVANSTON, WY—AUGUST 13, 2017—Under jockey Oscar Cervantes, Nsm Jayhawker flew from the gate to defeat Light Up The Dark by half-a-length in Sunday's $21,750 Gary Waite Maiden Memorial Stakes (not black type) at Wyoming Downs. General Hood finished another half-length back in third.

Trainer Diana Garfias saddled Nsm Jayhawker to his fourth win of the season. The 3-year-old Carters Cartel colt completed the 330 yards in a quick :16.658 clocking, into a 5-mph crosswind, to earn a 104-speed index.

Racing for owner Aron Saenz, Nsm Jayhawker picked up $10,223 to double his earnings total to $20,544. Earlier this year the Kansas-bred gelding won the Weber Downs Maiden Frolic. Bred by Nancy McCloy, Nsm Jayhawker is out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Jessthelouisianagirl.

Light Up the Dark, a daughter of multiple stakes sire Hawkinson, racing for owner Tom Peffer and trainer Travis Offret earned $3,915 for finishing second. Tyson Lusk was aboard the California-bred out of Iba Quick Chick by Chicks Beduino. Steve D. Burns, DVM bred the gray filly.

Jose Chacon saddled third-place finisher General Hood for owner Araceli Chacon. Wes Young bred the gray Mighty Corona gelding in Utah from the Easy Winning Jet mare Easy Ops. Rene Lopez was riding and earned $2,393 for the effort.

Sixy Hero On Fire V, Hard Four Prize, All Get Out, Stirring The Pot, Oh La, E Z Empress and Cash Me In A Corona completed the field.
