Upset Winner El Bucanasczech Takes Oneida County Derby

MALAD, ID—AUGUST 13 —El Bucanasczech and jockey Eric Ayala pulled off an upset victory in the $4,850 Oneida County Derby (not black type) on Sunday afternoon. The wire-to-wire win earned the duo a 101 speed index with a final time of :15.277 for the 300-yard event.

El Bucanasczech ($26.60) was third in his trial race at Oneida on August 6, after being fractious in the gate. The gelding was sharper in the final, breaking on top and dueling throughout the race before pulling ahead by a neck. Monty Arrossa trains the son of Corona Czech for owner and breeder Vicente Treyes.

El Bucanasczech was bred in Idaho out of Race to Riches, by Bono Jazz. This was his second win in eight lifetime starts.

The winner was the fifth-fastest qualifier to the Oneida County Derby; second-fastest qualifier A Stubby Corona and third-fastest qualifier Kono finished second and third, respectively, in Sunday’s final.

A Stubby Corona and Juan Rameriz hit the wire a neck behind the winner and a neck ahead of Kono. The Garth Blattner trainee stayed close throughout the race to earn her third second-place finish in eight starts.

A Stubby Corona was bred in Idaho by her owners, Les and Darla Barlow, by The Louisiana Cartel out of Sign of Pride, by First Wrangler. Barlow also co-bred and owned Sign of Pride, a multiple-stakes winning mare that qualified for the AQHA Distaff Challenge Championship (G1) in 2005 at Los Alamitos.

Kono won her trial, in which winning horse El Bucanasczech finished third, and remained close to the top two finishers throughout the final. With Rene Lopez aboard, the daughter of Dashair hit the board for the third time in her eight career starts.

Matt Carter Larsen trains for Stephen Jay Larsen, who also bred the filly in Idaho. She is out of the Blushing Bug mare Italian Princess, who won the Intermountain Futurity at Elko in 2002 and qualified for the 2003 Silver Dollar Derby at Wyoming Downs.

Completing the field were fastest qualifier Jb Corona Heart, Cm Partners in Crime, Ss Legal Separation, Hadtobebasic and Throwin Up the X.
