LOS ALAMITOS, CA—OCTOBER 7, 2017—Martha Wells’ homebred Yanque knocked it out of the park in his trial to the $129,100 Wild West Futurity, as he flew from post number four on the way to the fastest qualifying time on Sunday at Los Alamitos.
Ridden by Cruz Mendez for trainer Matt Fales, Yanque scored a 1-¾ length victory in the first of four Wild West trials, while covering the 350-yards in :17.682. His winning time was 15/100ths faster than the second fastest qualifier Moonie Blues’ :17.833.

Sent off as the 1-5 favorite, Yanque did not disappoint as he led comfortably from start to finish. He came into the trials as one of the favorites to qualify based on his solid local resume. The Favorite Cartel gelding qualified to the Governor’s Cup Futurity during the summer and came into this race after winning The Plan Handicap on September 8. He made a pair of starts at Turf Paradise at the beginning of his career.
Lisa Anderson’s Moonie Blues also dominated her heat, as she took off like a rocket out of the gate to establish a two-length advantage. It was never in doubt from there for the Jaime Gomez-trainee. Ridden by Jesus Rios Ayala, the daughter of Freighttrain B crossed the wire two lengths ahead of her competition.
Hernan Torres and Chris Carpenter’s L Bar D Classic Trip, a son of the Thoroughbred sire Mr. Nightlinger, and Freddy Ibarra’s Warhockm by Zoomin For Bux, also won their respective trials and will be joining the two likely favorites in the final.
