Cartels Special Girls Wins South Dakota QH Futurity

Cartels Special Girls Wins South Dakota QH Futurity

FORT PIERRE, SD—MAY 6, 2018—Cartels Special Girl broke her maiden at first asking and picked up her first black type Sunday (May 6) with impressive showing in the $15,000 South Dakota Quarter Horse Futurity at Fort Pierre.

Cartels Special Girl flew from the gate under jockey Francisco Estrada to defeat Specialcowboycorona by 1-¾ lengths. She completed the 250 yards in :13.741 seconds to earn an 84 speed index with a 5 mph tailwind.

Trainer Tom Moody saddled the 2-year-old daughter of multiple stakes sire Furyofthewind for owner Valerie Shoun. Bred by Rodney Ruza, from the Oak Tree Special mare Wanna Be Special, the Cartels Special Girl earned $7,200 for the effort.

Bob and Gary Johnson's homebred Specialcowboycorona earned $3,075 for his runner-up effort. Also making his first start for trainer Robert Don Johnson, the sorrel colt was ridden by Jake Olesiak. The South Dakota-bred son of Cowboy Cartel is out of Hawktomistic by Hawkinson.

Whataflynn Rider finished a nose off Specialcowboycorona to pick up $1,500 for third. Also trained by Robert Don Johnson, the son of Whatafly Special races for owner/breeder Warren Golliher. Jeramie Fennel had the riding assignment aboard the brown colt from the Lil McGinn mare Lil Miss Alexandra.

Bhr Flashing Effort, Bhr Miss Jessie Winz and Just Plain Fast completed the field. B Eyeofthetiger and Ohmy Hoof Arted were scratched.
